I'm happy to say I managed to boycott this iteration of the Battlefield series. An interesting note though, I think the sort of unofficial push to have people boycott has worked to an extent. Going off the Xfire.com statistics, I've been monitoring BF2142 for the past week or so. It makes it to the Top 10 games, but for all but absolute peak hours, is consistently played less than BF2 is.
Perhaps I'm looking at it to early, and 2142 hasn't fully saturated yet, but if this is any indicator then most people haven't bothered getting BF2142 yet, instead sticking to to BF2. The reason is probably twofold:
1) Boycott Campaign
2) Losing BF2 ranks
No one wants to lose over 200 hours of work and a huge rank just to switch to a new game that is slightly different.
