I love the games mainly due to their attempts at a Wild West setting (although this is usually shattered towards the end, especially in the later two). The soundtracks are great, the most recent game's being my favorite in the series. The turn-based combat was pretty cookie cutter as far as the first three games go, but the HEX system used in 4 and 5 is one of my favorite RPG battle systems to date.
The stories? Nothing to write home about. They're as typical as JRPGs get. They're nothing god-awful, but there's nothing ground-breaking or moving. I don't go in expecting that, so I'm never disappointed.
