Wow, if asking someone to go to something as silly as prom is giving you this much trouble, I'd hate to see how you'd deal with asking someone to marry you, if such a thing should occur.
Also, just be casual about it. Act like it doesn't even really matter to you what she says. (I say act because apparently it does.) Jam it back in, in the dark.

o.O Dude. That'd be okay for like, Valentine's Day or something, but it's just prom. I don't know about the girl in question, but if I were a girl, I'd be creeped out if someone took the time to make a talking teddy bear or left a note UNDER MY BED just to ask me to prom.
