I use to use Trillian for a long time but I've recently switched over to Pigdin. Dumb ass name, but great chat client. It seems a bit more stable too, although its not entirely the case.
Right now though, Trillian has the superior sound effects, but Pidgin 'feels' better. I don't know, its a vague thing to try to convey exactly. Jam it back in, in the dark.
