Having played the demo, I found it very strange that the mechs would feed off of your energy supply - one would expect them to have their own power core, which you could plug the environment suit into (game effect: 'thermal energy' does not decrease while operating one).
As for movement feeling slow: when you're slogging through knee- or waist-deep snow, it makes sense... but there are areas without such, wherein you'd expect movement to be a bit more responsive. Query of folks who've played through the game: are there areas which one would think to be warm enough to forestall the necessity of energy drain?
This energy drain has one other extremely annoying result: it makes cautious, methodical play difficult. Case in point: one of the demo levels is set up in such a way that you can thin out the most annoying of the OPFOR (the mech pilot and maybe one or both of the turret gunners) before wading in.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
