Wikipedia have a large entry for Bubblegum Crisis as well as for 2040 and other related series: Bubblegum Crisis at Wikipedia
I had never seen the original but heard a lot of good things about the series. Then I saw 2040 being shown on TV late at night so I just started watching that. The series was pretty interesting with quite a bit of comedy, drama and action thrown in. As I understand it, 2040 is pretty much a retelling of the original story, though I hear there were a few significant changes here and there.
