Well, if you're looking for a dark series with a lot of drama revolving around, I highly recommend Monster. The storyline is one of the best out there and there's plenty of action to go around with regards to the protagonist and the person he's chasing after.
Gankutsuou is also fairly action-heavy although the animation in that series is something to marvel at. If you're a fan of Dumas's Count of Monte Cristo, this series is right up your alley as it takes in a lot of the novel's plot and brings in a lot of intrigue.
Finally, I am fond of Shingetsutan Tsukihime as a vampire series. It focuses quite a bit on the characters, but there's a lot of secrets that'll be revealed and combat as the main characters square off against the main antagonist.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
