When you buy enclosures always make sure that they have a decent fan preferably with variable speed settings or space to fit your own. I have this really nice ICY BOX one which has a great cooling fan which is super quiet; there is a model with firewire too.
No it will not cause any damage whatsoever. Jam it back in, in the dark.
