Have you upgraded to/or are running Windows XP Pro SP1a or higher; that may the problem if not upgrade to SP1a then SP2. Also the motherboard should have a driver CD bundled in.
Otherwise go to the device manager through the control panel and you can check what kind of USB sockets your PC has. Jam it back in, in the dark.

If you do a quick google search I believe there are methods to reburn your copy of Windows XP with Sp1a and SP2 slipstreamed in so you don't have to go through this cumbersome process next time you install Windows Xp.
There's nowhere I can't reach.
