Be a bit more assertive and firm, of course nobody listens to that voice in the background. You must be more active when participating in any conversation i.e. look at me I'm here (without looking like an attention seeker).
One thing I find I'm good at is being able to jump into any conversation, like the other day these 2 guys who are in my class, who I don't know very well were talking about the course. I just over heard what they were saying but I was able to join the conversation very easily, we sat and talked for a good 30 mins after that. Jam it back in, in the dark.
