Like, at my college's computer lab, all the monitors are 19" LCD screens and I don't mind the high resolution.
At home, my 17" CRT monitor doesn't work that way for some reason. Games, yes, bring on the high resolution. Desktop/browsing/word processing, no.

Is your refresh rate over 60Hz for your desktop CRT? I know some people are super-sensitive to that, and at higher resolutions your monitor might not support refresh rates over 60Hz (where most people apparently get significant eye strain).
Alternatively, you could try turning up your resoltuion to display webpages correctly, and just turn on features such as Large Icons and increase the default text size for things in Windows.
I actually find a higher resolution to be easier to do word processing with since I can be at a higher zoom while maintaining exactly a page width across my whole monitor. Really useful for when I'm reading .pdfs.
There's nowhere I can't reach.
