Kris Kross'll make you Jump (Ultimate Stars!)

Not a Wii game topic!?!?

Platform: DS
Players: 1-4
WI-FI CAPABILITIES
Price: Approx. $50 CDN on YesAsia

The quintessential game for those who love anime/manga and Super Smash Brothers/Multiplayer brawling. Includes characters from many, many, many Shonen Jump series:
- Naruto
- One Piece
- Dragonball Z
- Bleach
- Death Note
- Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac
- Eyeshield 21
- Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn
- Black Cat
- Kinnikuman/Ultimate Muscle
- D. Gray-Man
- HunterXHunter
- Dr. Slump
- Prince of Tennis
- Slam Dunk
- Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
- Bobobobobo
- Yu-Gi-Oh!
- Ichigo 100%
- Shaman King
- Gintama
- Rurouni Kenshin
- Busou Renkin
- Yuu Yuu Hakusho

- Muhyo to Rouji
- Roukendashi Blues
- Tottemo Luckyman
- I's
- Captain Tsubasa

- Sakigake! Otokojuku
- Ninku
- Pyuu to Fuku! Jaguar
- Houshin Engi/Soul Hunter
- Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star
- Mr. Fullswing
- Hikaru No Go
etc.

Just like it's predecessor, Jump Superstars, Ultimate Stars features the "koma" system in which character from the panels of SJ manga can be summoned via the touchscreen to aid you in battle. The effects of these characters vary widely in usage and are often temporary and supplementary assists.

The characters you control (occupy 4 or more panels) are also part of these panels, and you can switch amongst characters at a mere touch. These characters are controlled with the buttons rather than the touch pad and have various special and super moves.

The biggest improvements in this version are the addition of WiFi play with anyone worldwide, and the gigantic character roster which has significantly improved on the first one.

*NOTE: There is a translation patch out!*

Looking at gamefaqs (which I'm sure many of us will rely on, thank you Genroh!) I'm really liking all the added options which DJMeas pointed out.
Download Play
Wifi Play (vs. random, vs. friends)
Quiz (I don't think we'll be trying this very much)
L + R shortcut buttons
Evolution Chart

Looks like it'll be quite a while until I can assemble my dream tea of Sanji, Kazuki, and Arale again, but in the meantime I can assemble everyone's friend codes and we could probably all face off against each other one day. Perhaps with koma restrictions since I'm pretty sure 4 panel Allen Walker would not have a chance against 8 panel Sasuke.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

In JSS, you needed to use certain koma's to complete a mission. JUS doesn't have that kinda of difficulty like it used to but it was very annoying too. Some missions you have to use certain characters like Naruto or Bo-bobo
2 panel koma seem to also fall under the support category, support being, if you touch them or have L/R assigned to them and press it, you'll summon them for a second and the effect is dependent on the koma. Regardless of size, support koma expend when summoned 1 full special gauge so pick wisely.
Eg. 2 panel Sanji = small healing, while 3 panel Gon = delayed attack
~

That also reminds me of another change, in how 1 panel help koma no longer offer dinky status effects when touched. They more useful now in that you don't have to touch them, and simply linking them to your battle characters gives them neat passive abilities.
Eg. Saya = Max health up, while Naruto = Wall Jump

I don't like how you are forced to used certain decks like Kinniku Man's or Seiya's for their respective worlds to clear certain missions, but so far the ai's pretty braindead when they're not gang beating on you in a pincer attack. I've noticed that they seem to suicide when hanging off a ledge instead of opting to jump back up a lot.

Sanji + Lenalee now round out my primary deck. Waiting on Arale, but I don't know if she'll fit without sacrificing many help girls (for Sanji) in the deck.

Trying to face against random people proves unfruitful. I've only found one person who quickly left in all the times I tried to just search for random people. Getting impatient for everyone else's copy to arrive :P Maybe it's the time zone difference.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

chato get your friend code in here! By time zone difference I meant probably with the Japanese people that have this game

Haha FW, 15-30 minutes of experimentation/playing with the faq will quickly lay the foundation for the rest of the game. (eg. Remembering to set a leader everytime you edit your battle characters, Having at least one of each help, support, and battle koma in a deck, etc.)

I am so hot for this game still! After 4/5 hours of studying for finals I binged for 6 hours straight and finally have Arale, and have three solid character favourites (Lvl. 5 Lenalee, Lvl. 6 Tsuna, Lvl. 6 Arale) which I split over decks for balance and variety.

I had trouble with all walls broken in a minute too, but if you're talking about that mission on HunterXHunter planet, it requires use of up+X to power Gon up. You can take care of the top two walls on the topmost platform with repeated Y attacks (you'll scrape the walls barely, contrary to what it looks like). Drop down to the next platform and get rid of the third wall from the top. Use repeated drop-> B attacks for the two walls under, while masterfully using down+A to land precisely on the springboards with speed. Take care of the bottom 2 walls with repeated y. Quickly dash over to the other side and repeat. Do Up+X whenever it wears off, and restart if your down+A doesn't end up with you bouncing off a spring too much.

It's hard to wing it with help characters too, but I really only care about the effects if it's something like triple jump or regeneration. The best you can do is just to learn katakana. (only 45 characters) After that, you can read the majority of the names. It's simpler than it appears (eg. Naruto = Na Ru To, in three katakana characters), but it's understandable if you don't want to exert that much effort.

For a starting point:
Gon = HunterXHunter, Black spiky hair, yellow energy attacks
Tsuna = Hitman Reborn, flame on his head, accompanied by a baby in a black cowboy outfit
Allen Walker = D. Gray-Man, gray hair, metal arm, "akuma" in speech bubble
Jaguar = Pyou to Fukyuu Jaguar!, orange hair, runs with arms spread out, uses extending flute
Bobobo = Bobobobo bobobo, yellow afro, uses nose hair

etc.

I tried the online function yesterday and I couldn't put it down!
I was dreading that people would be just using "Level 7 Ichigo!" or "Level 7 Kenshiro!" as the norm, and I was partially right, but then I was also a bit wrong.

Sure, people used those characters. I would see the same strategy from different people as well:
Kenshiro -> forward+y, make you hang off ledge, use X multi punch special when you get up, taunt to force you down
Ichigo -> Speed speed speed, Gatsuga Tenshou! Flash Step everywhere.

There were some very interesting decks and the option of saving rival decks is very intriguing. It's always neat to see if someone beat you with skill (primarily level 4 characters + assists), or with power (Level 7/8 characters). Everyone and their mom seems to use Sanji, Ichigo or Kenshiro. They have some favourite assists too such as Future Swordsman Trunks, and Seiya's downward multi punch.

I'm sort of hoping others save my deck since I seem to be the only one who uses Arale. I do well with her at poking and poking which gives a lot of people trouble, but ultimately lose out due to either silly mistakes such as divebombing my other character off the screen with a jumping Y, or forgetting to use my 2 panel Chopper.
Looks like a good balance of quantity and power works to one's advantage.

Yesasia has it for cheaper in total since shipping is free, but I don't know if it'll ship as fast (My copy only took 5 days).

By the way, who exactly is that koma that pauses and then stabs with a spear repeatedly for a while? That seems to be the cpu's favourite support to call, and it's really annoying.

Nah, he's shirtless with blue pants and the spear thrusts stab a lot covering a wide area in front of the summoner and the pause isn't that long. Zoro is a counter koma and nowhere near this annoying.

All right kids, Thursday's perfect for me, since I have to cram for a particular exam in the next 2 days anyways, then I can enjoy the bliss. I completed all the missions and their secret requirements, so I basically need the online matchups to be able to fill out everyone's evolution charts for good (farming gems is too tedious, especially with greedy cpus).

I noticed the online lag, but so far, it wasn't so bad that it made me quit. It's less than a second for the most part, so it's still enjoyable. I'm starting to think that the only reason that I do good with Arale and my poop deck is because of the delay. :s I'm also against Gear 3 Luffy and Kyuubi Naruto spamming.

I'm working from 8-4 tomorrow too (current time here is 8 pm), and my exam's on Saturday so I definitely have time to play tomorrow as well. I know more people have this than just us 3!

Looks like online matches, while a viable option, still aren't a very good way to get gems, so after completing all the stages I'm at a very slow acquisition rate. Even beating the Ranking modes takes a while (20 matches)

All right, all right, settle down kids! I actually forgot to tell you to abuse your push block (X repeatedly during guard), which would have helped a little bit. Honestly, people learn fast. If I was really any good, then I would have managed a perfect victory, but I never did It's also highly recommended to remember what items do, whenever I turn them on. Always try to grab the Jump magazines for infinite super!

If it helps, 3 on 1 (I think you can do that with the team settings) was a actually an option I was thinking about after yesterday's matches. That would be lots of fun, like trying to take out Giant DK, not that he was astoundingly hard or anything. Plus, I feel like some of my level 8 characters are cheating, even though no one uses them (Caramelman Z >.>), although the poo deck was totally fair.

Owned work earlier, and I don't know how to study any further for tomorrow's exam, so I'm up again.

Yep importing is a MUST.
Honestly, JUS totally trumps JSS, unless you have a weird Mr. Fullswing or Shikamaru fetish, some of the supports they removed for a weird reason. Unless you want it for collector's sake or find it cheap and locally one day by some miracle, steer far and clear away from it. Thing with JUS is that there is literally nothing to do after you've unlocked all the koma (which can be done quicker since there's less in comparison). Wifi obviously boosts replay value of JUS and rival data as well.

Well well, this is quite interesting now As more and more people are coming out of the woodwork, the possibility of 4 player battles exponentially increases. Looking at most people's local time settings, getting together for battles shouldn't be too hard for the most part. I'm up for a battle tonight or pretty much any time or day after 6 p.m. today.

Ok, I should have done this along time ago, to attract more people, since the curious ones would still need a little nudge in order to look up on what this game is actually is. So there you go, just as described:
Manga + Super Smash Brothers = Jump Ultimate Stars

So our 4 player battles have finally come to fruition, and unfortunately, also came massive lag. It was someone's connection though, and for the most part, the game runs with minimal lag online. Especially against some Japanese people. I'm going to have to start deleting some of these rival decks with all these different but subtle variations on characters. It's making Championship mode quite annoying.

I get no lag, despite several others complaining about it. Honestly, any lag is most likely from sore people who aren't confident enough that they will win and leave their torrents running. Of course, lag sometimes pops up for no reason, as experienced yesterday in a match amongst us Canadians. Most of the time though, it's just a tiny slight slower than playing against the cpu yourself whenever I face random people with relatively stable connections. Nothing too impeding.

No :S, but you should still just try 10 or so matches before giving up in frustration. You could always try FC battles which are usually lag free for the most part. You don't know what kinds of stupid people you can face in random "Japan battle", such as losers that torrent on purpose.

So you did get connected, but you got ejected and have to reset your router each time? That's quite unfortunate but at least you tasted success, however brief. I don't know how effective the dongle will be but it shouldn't hurt to give it a shot. The game becomes very addicting once your online capabilities work consistently

Heehee hee, sorry for intruding. I knew I was invading when I saw the two of you covertly go online for the first time this year, and I was expecting to you guys to kick me out after the first match or so. Apologies for all the poo/yoyo flinging, lancing and "ZA WARUDO"ing! I can no longer play easy with you guys, and will have to get slightly more serious from now on since you both improved.

Very fun stuff, and of course I extend an invitation to anyone who posted their FC to join my games if you ever see me hosting, because GFFers are NEVER EVER an intrusion to me. Some GFaqers may be another story

PS. My fun decks were:
- Orange Hair, or close enough (Nami, Ichigo, Kenshin, Jaguar, Shanks)
- Pale Hair (Killua, Kazuki, Hitsugaya, Gokudera, Allen)
- Spiky Blondes, basically any combination from dbz (Vegetto, Gotenks, Vegeta)
- Little Boys aka. Pedo deck (Tsuna, Gon, Killua, Ninku, Muhyo, Orochimaru)
- Girls (Eve, Lenalee, Robin, Anna, Sanji [massive heal to girls])

I'm playing serious when I use Kazuki or Nami 6 against you for a long period of time >=)

PPS. Like how you used the starter deck for the last one, so I couldn't peek at what your deck was. >.>

Don't worry, GFFer fights have so far been blessed with lag-free occurrences. No losers torrenting while playing here

This is quite distressing, looks like the FC list has a maximum of 50, and there are some people on there permanently that I can't delete. If I try to delete them, then my game freezes. I still need to make room for all the GFFers I haven't added yet.

I'm still hot for games, and would classify myself as middle tier, so feel free to challenge me. My hours of play are 10:30 pm EST to 3:00 am EST on weekdays, and anytime on weekends.

I'm battling tonight and definitely after tomorrow's midterm so you better stop flash stepping away with Yoruichi from me chato :P

BTW, no "big 3", "saviour supports", uber-cheese or whatever you fancy terming them (aka. Sena 3, Trunks 3, Seiya 3), otherwise all that smack talk loses credibility Teams will be hilarious, so I highly anticipate this. Tomorrow from anywhere after 9 p.m. onwards. I will most certainly be on.

Don't worry, these decks are experimental at best and have flaws which I've found out. Plus your Naruto gives me trouble if I get hit.

JUS session tomorrow night! Meet up at #rtfo, or if you can't be bothered, then just hop in my/Freelance Wolf's (whoever hosts) game. Need 1-2 more players, although all are welcome!

I was playing more championship mode yesterday and I didn't have a challenger at the end of it, so I didn't get a premade deck! I only have like 52, but that time I had 1 second place finish as opposed to my usual 20 first place finishes (silly Jstar :s). Anyone know if that affected my ability to face the challenger for the deck at the end?
