What I find eerie is the fact that my city has the highest crime rate in all of Canada. Yet I've never been mugged/beat up, or whatever. Never. Seriously, WTF.

Out of curiousity, where do you live? My guess is either Halifax (where I am), or Regina. I know Halifax has the most violent crimers per capita.
That being said, I haven't been mugged. One of my friends was in broad daylight at a convenience store. The sad part is how that area, which is about a 10 minute walk from my neighbourhood, has gone down the shitter. When I lived there, there were a lot of younger kids (we were all about 10) and the older kids in the area weren't so bad. Kids grow up

. Drug dealers, gang members, albanian refugee's who start shit for fun, thieves, etc. etc. The convenience store gets robbed at gunpoint pretty frequently now.
ANYWAY.
Closest random violent act that happened to me was that me and two friends were almost stomped down by two huge black girls while we were waiting for a ride, outside, downtown, at 10:30-11:00ish. They thought we called them a bitch. Got it cleared up, and our ride came.
Was reading a local music scene messageboard later that night. The girls went after these two drunk white girls and beat the shit out of them. They got sent to the hospital, and then a bunch of black guys came and started shit with the scene kids. The cops got called. That's about it >_>
Jam it back in, in the dark.
