Don't do it. Onboard soundchips are simply worse than anything else that processes audio. Notebook design makes it even worse because of the ultra-compact packaging.

Computer environment is noisy by design, so you really don't want to do any serious recording with a PC.

If you don't have a chance or still want to do it, then make a simple test. Plug a stereo source (2 channels) into your mic/line-in/whatever and check if the recorded signal is really stereo. You could e.g. slide the balance knob on the source and check the resulting audio that comes to your recording program.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
