This track was about two days in the making. I received the beat from XV on a Sunday and wrote most of it that night. It never really takes me long to put together my lyrics, it's usually the performance aspect that takes most of my time.
When I got in the lab, I wanted to create a song that is a throwback to what I consider 'classic' hip-hop in that it's just fun, party-type music. That's different from a lot of the club music you hear today, which is really dance-oriented. As I was laying down the vocals, I changed my voice to a more precise and clean cut tone to capture that element. I think it really helped me bring out the charisma that was needed to pull this track off. The bridge originally was supposed to be sung by this R&B artist I work with named Rashad Knight, but as I was writing the words, I just felt like a more intimate sound was needed on the bridge. So Russ and I decided to expand upon the call & response theme of the hook and make it seem as if I was performing before a large crowd on the bridge before I came back in with the last verse. As for why I have one of my Myspace genres as 'progressive' -- it's because I use a lot of elements in my music that are atypical of standard hip-hop. I deviate from the standard 16-bar verse structure a lot. I use a lot of bridges and breaks and often have live instrument solos on tracks. Compared to a lot of mainstream hip-hop, I consider the music I do a lot more 'musical' in that I prefer live instrumentation to synthesized 90 percent of the time. A lot of the material I'm talking about has not been released -- most of it won't even appear on my first retail album, Solo Mission, as I'm reserving a lot of it for my sophmore magnum opus, Dark America.
