In Newfoundland every little community always has at least one local legend; most times they're usually ghost stories. I haven't had any particular encounters with ghosts, but I do remember the one legend that was very popular in our community and it was only a community of 600 people.

Back in the old days my community was actually split into two communities. Eventually one of those communities died out, and the people had migrated to the other community. Very deep in the hills behind my house about a 2-3 km walk is a very old graveyard with three gravestones there.

As kids we were told to stay away from that graveyard because to my parents and a lot of other people that's where the devil worshippers were buried. It was a very ominous feeling I remember always looking at the graveyard as a kid from the top of the hill. They say if you went there during the night you would disappear or the fairies would take you away.

There have a lot of people especially 50 to 100 years ago that disappeared from going out to the hills but I probably know why. The hills have a lot of bogs that are incredibly deep, and also there were a few old mine shafts in the area over 100 years ago. Supposedly over a hundred years ago there use to be pirates that use to abduct people who use to go out to back of the hills to do berry picking and other things.

Despite all the ways this local legend is untrue. It still exists, I actually think me and my wife are actually going to visit that old graveyard when we go up to my community this summer. I always wanted to see what that graveyard was like.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
