I despise exercise, I really do.
But since being diagnosed with diabetes, I have begrudgingly tried to raise my activity level. Even for a Type I diabetic, exercise is essential; it helps to lower the insulin requirement, among other things. I don't exercise much, but any exercise is a vast improvement over my former habits of ZERO exercise. -I ride my bike to campus; this is a solid 20 minutes of exercise each way, a lot of it uphill. -I take the stairs. This isn't hard, because I hate elevators; and lemme tell ya, jogging up 5 flights of stairs can really get the heart rate going. -I walk or run a mile, occasionally... I try to a couple of times a week, but it's usually a sporadic thing. -I clean house. I clean this lady's house once every two weeks or so, and it's a huge workout. It takes 4+ hours, and... well, many of you may not be used to cleaning, but it's quite the physical workout. -I babysit. I always get a good workout when I babysit the 3-year-old twins that I adore. I run around with them, toss them in the air, and do some cleaning while I'm there. At 40 pounds each, it's like lifting weights for hours on end! I usually get home and flop on my bed, exhausted. As for food, I'll be the first to admit that I eat very unhealthily. However, I have successfully made the switch from regular soda to diet, which must have cut a good 500 calories from my daily intake... Also, I've been forcing myself not to get fries when I eat out, or at least to get the tiny size. This clearly isn't enough, though. I am 5'7" (joining the club) and 160 pounds. 'Tisn't enormous, but it's definitely too much. I would love to be 140... that is where I am comfortable. 130 would be my ultimate goal, but... let's not overdo it. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
