Forget you ever played VII and go get IV, V and VI. IV and V still have that oldschool charm, and VI probably marks the series' initial foray into scifi garbage - except it's more steampunk than scifi here, and it's actually amazingly-well stylised.
I really can't stand ANY of the PS1 FF games. VII was the worst in the series, VIII wasn't much better and IX was an ill-conceived stab at trying to regain that retro-charm.
Tactics isn't bad, either.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
