I love the samples I've heard of the new Nightwish.

Once was pants. Seriously fuck Tarja.

I've been getting into Sigh again recently. Hangman's Hymn fucking rocks. I have a compulsion to share it for anyone unfamiliar; check my journal tomorrow. The album sounds like kamikaze thrashy black metal. Every song is superbly written.

I checked out Gallows Gallery, too, which I was disappointed in. Weak, nowhere near heavy enough, far below expectations. I might upload it at the same time as HH tomorrow, but it's not great.

But, uh, on that note - Can anyone recommend any other good JBM bands?

How ya doing, buddy?

I don't see any mention of the upcoming Ayreon CD here, but holy shit, it's going to be epic.

Eighteen singers total, five yet to be announced. Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Jorn Lande (Masterplan), Thomas Englund (Evergrey), Simone Simons (Epica), Floor Jansen (After Forever)... No Daniel Gildenlow but his sister-in-law, Liselotte Hegt, has a role. It's like the next best thing!

Then, running on a similar theme, is Frameshift's new album, The God Delusion, featuring Dan Swano (!!!!) and Magali Luyten (newcomer kind of girl, she's on the new Ayreon too).

And then there's the fact that Machinae Supremacy are about to start recording their new CD...

There's never a time when I haven't got an awesome release to look forward to.

So Helloween's new album, Gambling With The Devil, rocks. I thought their last two offerings were kind of iffy, but this is like (pardon the expression) a return to their roots.

Also there are some growls.

I'm seeing Moonsorrow in March. They're supporting this band you might have heard of. Children of something-or-another, I dunno; they're kind of lame.

"Bye Bye Beautiful" and the opening track are easily my favourites. Anette's voice is faaaar nicer than Tarja's imho.

Not metal, but it's alright. I don't like it as much as their last one; it hasn't got that same kind of epic feeling.

Tvangeste is undeniably gay. I can't stop laughing whenever I hear the raven at the beginning of the first real song on that album. It's free, though, so...

I think it's great when rock and metal get some airplay on the radio. The more people aware of this amazing genre of music, the better.
Unfortunately 99% of people will be all like 'fuck this noise' and pop in a Britanna Aguilopez CD.

And people wonder why metalheads are perceived as closed-minded.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Sooo the tracklist for the new Ayreon album, 01011001, has been revealed, along with a January 25th release date.

1. Age of Shadows 10:47
2. Comatose 04:26
3. Liquid Eternity 08:10
4. Connect the Dots 04:13
5. Beneath the Waves (Beneath the Waves - Face the Facts - But a Memory... - World Without Walls - Reality Bleeds) 08:26
6. Newborn Race (The Incentive - The Vision - The Procedure - Another Life - Newborn Race - The Conclusion) 07:49
7. Ride the Comet 03:29
8. Web of Lies 02:50

Disc 2
1. The Fifth Extinction (Glimmer of Hope - World of Tomorrow Dreams - Collision Course - From the Ashes - Glimmer of Hope (reprise)) 10:29
2. Waking Dreams 06:31
3. The Truth Is In Here 05:12
4. Unnatural Selection 07:15
5. River of Time 04:24
6. E=MC2 05:50
7. The Sixth Extinction (Echoes on the Wind - Radioactive Grave - 2085 - To the Planet of Red - Spirit on the Wind - Complete the Circle) 12:18

And with a FUCKING AWESOME cast (Dan Gildenlow, Tom Englund, Simone Simons, Floor Jansen, Jonas Renkse...), I think I already have a strong candidate for album of the year 2008.

Can't wait for my promo copy

So, it might be old news, but I was trawling Therion's official site and apparently they are going to be playing Kali Yuga Part III at some shows, and recording it sometime in the future.

Thrilling.

I saw a thread a long while ago on another board which was called something along the lines of 'An Introduction to Metal'. The first post had little headers describing the different genres (not mentioning sub-subgenres like groove metal, thankfully), what they entailed, how they came about, how stereotypical "metal" bands are anything but, and examples of prominent bands of each field. I'd be more than happy to throw one together for this topic.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I tend to reconcile the comparative suckiness of now-popular bands by listening to both their old and new material.

That's how I roll.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

So I've discovered a fun doom band who go by the name of Forgotten Tomb, and they sound like Katatonia's Brave Murder Day. Constantly. With good production. I've no clue how well-known they are, but I'll upload their newest album sometime soon if anyone's interested.

Holy pumpkin! Helloween! *_*
It took me a while after I got Keeper of the Seven Keys - The Legacy flying around here for some months before I actually got through to actually listen to it, and then it really got me. King for a 1000 Years is really a mind boggling piece of music.
Now I got me the new album, Gambling with the Devil, which is catchy, fast, and incredibly fun.
Get the original Keeper albums - The Legacy is good, but the title track on Part 2 shits all over it. Best song they've ever done by miles.

Quick question for Morrigan - What's going up with the EM? Is your hosting being problematic, or is some kind of upgrade rolling in?

Nah, they're just southern, bitter and intimidating.

Additional Spam:
Well try out this song then. It's going to be a music video off of the new album they're promoting. It's progressive, hard, yet melodic as well.

They're not J-Pop dude, why dont you just listen and see for yourself.
Pretty sure listening to that dirge just caused my scrotum to leap up into my chest cavity.

Tell me. Are you a fan of HIM?

Well, yeah, they seem to be targeting the same weepy-anime-fan-with-a-livejournal demographic.

You know, I gotta be honest...you're coming off as a pretentious metalhead, who refuses to listen to anything not metal cuz its 'gay' to him.
I listen to plenty of extremely campy/effeminate/I-don't-know-what-the-fuck music. Hell, eighties synthpop is one of the best things ever. I also don't consider myself much of a metalhead! But, uh, I dunno, you can hardly accuse someone of being pretentious and exclusive when you've stumbled into a thread where everybody but you knows what the fuck they're talking about, right?

I'm pretty damned openminded, but the issue here is more that you're being presumptive than anything else. Why did you think bringing this shite in here in the first place would yield a positive response?
