Only Arsis song I've heard was "A Diamond for Disease", which was pretty rocking but not as memorable as people were making them out to be.

k; downloaded. I've not listened to much yet, but what I've heard is pretty impressive so far - Only thing that annoys me is the vocals. Seriously, some of the time they sound like they're being done by an incredibly whiny woman.

Otherwise kickass. Thanks, sir.

So I'm listening to the new Therion album. If I didn't know better I'd swear it was a completely different band - It's very modern, lots of bass, less emphasis on the choirs. "Tuna 1613" is probably my favourite song so far.

Yes! Earliest one I've seen since In Flames' last album.

"Adulruna Rediviva" is pretty fantastic; it incorporates riffs, melodies etc from some earlier songs. The only one I can actually identify is Ginnungagap, but... Seriously wow.

I've also heard that "Adulruna Rediviva" is reportedly meant to reflect the direction they're taking with their NEXT album. It's the only song on the album that has a generally different sound, and I'm liking it a lot...

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Gothic metal bands with female vocalists I'd recommend aside from the ones already listed: Flowing Tears, Xandria, Leaves' Eyes, Theatre of Tragedy, Midnattsol.

It's a shame the new Lunatica album is kind of... Bad.

On my last day in Chile I went to this tiny market in Valdivia, and, well, there was a stall selling nothing but metal-related shit. Wallets with DT emblems, Katatonia patches, everything. I picked out this awesome bootleg Therion shirt - Really good quality, silkscreened, embossed lettering. Lemuria on the front, Sirius B on the back.

Uh... Viking metal DOES have a sound. Admittedly that sound is little more than exagerrated folk metal/thrash, but it really doesn't just lie in the lyrical themes.

No genre is ever based soley on lyrical content, if this notion applied to music in general. Then one could easily call Iron Maiden a Black metal band because of numerous references to satanic themes in their songs. Viking metal has a very unique sound, but it is one of those sounds which is really a bitch to describe and all one can do is really point you to artists that represent that genre and you will see that Amon Amarth are a far cry from viking metal.
For the purposes of this argument I'd also like to invoke the legions of HIM fans who are convinced that they are listening to something called "love metal".

Scarsick is Perfect Element II. Printed on the inside of the case, in very small font, is "the perfect element part 2: he".

TPE was about broken people. Scarsick is about a broken society.

Soooo the new Dream Theater has been titled and dated. Systematic Chaos hits shops in June.

Also it contains a 25-minute-plus track, and a song called Prophets of War. Just from the track/album titles it all sounds very Megadethly.

How ya doing, buddy?

Well, I think I have a candidate for biggest surprise of 2007 already: Charlie Dominici's new album.

He's doing this "O3" project which will consist of three separate concept albums. The first was a somewhat iffy, sort of pretentious acoustic album which had its moments but was overall pretty boring.

Well, the second part of the trilogy is released in a week, and of course it's already available online. And... It's heavy as hell. It's actually up to the standards of Dream Theater's Train of Thought as far as the sound goes, but with loads more synth and melody. Recommended to any prog metal fans.

A+++ would listen again~

Hope so. They toured with Megadeth (and Anthrax, incidentally) in 2005, and Portnoy is apparently a huge Megadeth fan, so it wouldn't be much of a surprise. Here's hoping.

Yeah "abominations" is a fairly accurate label to be fair. "Gears of War" was a good song though!

Stuff I've been hooked on since I last posted includes:

Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient. This album is like fifties comic book sci-fi metal. It's heavy and hilarious and it's the first non-ambient album Devy's produced solo for years. Totally worth it.

Also the new Dream Theater songs "Constant Motion" and "The Dark Eternal Night". There's a lot of bitching about both because, hey, it's a Dream Theater album produced after 2000 so it has to have a significant quota of hate directed towards it. Both songs are pretty good.

Lastly, the new Symphony X is heavy. I don't like it. I don't like them anyway, so this is a moot point.

I started out listening to Mercenary about two years ago. First band with growled vocals I listened to and loved. I'd say they were kind of a gateway in that I now like Vader, Arsis, The Project Hate MCMXCIX alongside catchier stuff like In Flames and Soilwork.
