It's sadly ironic that of the 'three big deaths', each men would have (reportedly) been scheduled to win a title (Owen, Eddie and Benoit).

I have to agree though. I wish it were a work as well. Be ultra pissed at the WWE and never watch it again, but at least breathe a sigh of relief.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I can only imagine what would happen if this WAS a work. Aside from alienating many of it's fans and losing whatever respect that was left, I'd wonder what would happen with various news sites and so forth who have been covering this.

Benoit Kills Family Over 3 Days...
Sources in the Fayette County Police Department are now working under the theory that Chris Benoit killed Nancy on Saturday, son Daniel on Sunday, and then killed himself earlier today.

Benoit was found dead in his weight room. Nancy was found dead in the living room. Daniel was found dead in his bedroom, according to an unnamed source in the department.

Lt. Tommy Pope told ABC News "the instruments of death were located on the scene," but didn't specify what those were or where they were found. Pope said the department was not actively searching for any suspects outside the house.


I really don't know how Benoit can literally go nuts for basically two or three days. Like, what was his mindset to go for three full days? Also, how DO they know the order?

WWE's VP of Government Relations Richard Hering was then made aware of several curious text messages sent by Benoit to WWE employees and wrestlers on Sunday morning. WrestleView.com has spoken with at least one strong source about this situation stating that Benoit's text messages almost had a "thank you and goodbye" theme to them causing many to be alarmed and concerned. As a result, Hering contacted Fayette County sheriffs on Monday and requested that they check out the Benoit residence when he was not getting back to WWE officials.

The 'thank you and good-bye' part is creepy.

TMZ has learned more about the deaths of WWE wrestling superstar Chris Benoit, his wife and son -- and the information is extremely disturbing.

Several Atlanta-based law enforcement sources have told TMZ Benoit may have strangled his wife on Saturday, then smothered his son in his bed a day later. Investigators refuse to officially comment, pending final confirmation by the coroner on the cause and time of the deaths.

One source told TMZ that Benoit was texting friends during Sunday's WWE "Vengeance" Pay-Per-View program -- possibly watching the show with his son, who may have been alive at the time.

According to sources, Benoit then hanged himself Monday in a weight room inside the family home.

I am seriously trying to imagine Benoit, just calmly sitting there with his son, watching the PPV (if that happened). I am trying to imagine what his son was thinking, or if he knew anything that was going on. I mean, to have his son come down for breakfast and spend the entire day with him. I am trying to imagne what was going through Benoit's mind at that point in time. It wasn't a few minutes, or a few hours, but an ENTIRE DAY. Was he thinking through his options? DId he just watch the PPV, kind of like to have that one last day of life doing what he wanted to do (and watching what he loved to watch), before doing what he did afterwards? Very freaky and sad stuff.

Wait...one thing though. I thought Benoit left Saturday morning/afternoon, missing the Saturday/Sunday shows...

More so, it now looks like the WWE wants nothing to do with this. They are still having the story up on this all, but they (and TNA) have removed all references of Benoit from their website. This is perhaps the darkest day of wrestling, even darker than Owen. Owen was tragic, but at least he didn't do this and even showing his caringness to the end (told the ref to move so he didn't fall on him).

In retrospect, this is a guy who was both a former WCW and WWE champion, multiple time tag, TV, US and IC champion, and would havebeen the ECW world heavyweight champion, let alone a future hall of famer. He was someone who had respect and admiration all over the world for being respectful, caring, and trustworthy. He was apart of the emotional wins in the Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania of 2004, whose picture with Eddie is one of the most emotional and huge pictures in Wrestlemania and Pro wrestling history (which now, never again can be used). He has all sorts of other accolades...the first man to win the Mania main event by submission, the first man to make Trips tap, the man to 'avenge' Bret by having Michaels tap, a man who was in several tribute matches for Pillman (main evented against Regal), Owen (went against Bret), and Eddie (faced Triple H after an emotional, to the part that he was crying, interview), and he would have been the second to man to have held 'all three' 'world' titles. NOw, it would be pretty hard to watch the 2004 Royal Rumble or Mania 2004 because no matter how cool those matches were, it will be hard to swallow knowing what we know. While the idea is slowly becoming more acceptable, it's still hard to believe that someone who had accomplished all that...and would have accomplished so much more, threw it all away...

I do, for once, feel bad for McMahon. I agree with maybe two things he has done in recent years, but this time he wasn't in the wrong, and acted only on instinct, love, and what was natural in the wrestling business.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. - Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his 7-year-old son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with a weight-machine pulley, authorities said Tuesday.

Investigators found anabolic steroids in the house and want to know whether the muscle man nicknamed "The Canadian Crippler" was unhinged by the bodybuilding drugs, which can cause paranoia, depression and explosive outbursts known as "roid rage."

Authorities offered no motive for the killings, which were spread out over a weekend, and would not discuss Benoit's state of mind. No suicide note was found.

"In a community like this it's bizarre to have a murder-suicide, especially involving the death of a 7-year-old," District Attorney Scott Ballard said. "I don't think we'll every be able to wrap our minds around this."

The Montreal-born Benoit was one of the stars of the WWE wrestling circuit and was known for his wholesome family-man image. His wife, Nancy, was a wrestling stage manager who worked under the name "Woman." They married in 2000.

When he won the world heavyweight championship in 2004, Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) hoisted the belt over his head and invited his wife and child into the ring to celebrate. Asked by the Calgary Sun that same year to name his worst vice: Benoit replied: "Quality time with my family is a big vice. It's something I'll fight for and crave."

Nevertheless, Nancy Benoit filed for a divorce in 2003, saying the couple's three-year marriage was irrevocably broken and alleging "cruel treatment." She later dropped the complaint, as well as a request for a restraining order in which she charged that the 5-foot-10, 220-pound Benoit had threatened her and had broken furniture in their home.

In the divorce filing, she said Benoit made more than $500,000 a year as a professional wrestler and asked for permanent custody of Daniel and child support. In his response, Benoit sought joint custody.

The bodies were found Monday afternoon in the house, situated off a gravel road in this suburb about 20 miles south of Atlanta.

Benoit's 43-year-old wife was killed Friday in an upstairs family room, her feet and wrists were bound and there was blood under her head, indicating a possible struggle, Ballard said. Daniel was probably killed late Saturday or early Sunday, the body found in his bed, the district attorney said.

Benoit, 40, apparently hanged himself several hours and as long as a day later, Ballard said. His body was found in a downstairs weight room, his body found hanging from the pulley of a piece of exercise equipment.

A closed Bible was placed next to the bodies of the wife and son, authorities said.

The prosecutor said he found it "bizarre" that the WWE wrestling star spread out the killings over a weekend and appeared to remain in the house for up to a day with the bodies.

Toxicology test results may not be available for weeks or even months, Ballard said. As for whether steroids played a role in the crime, he said: "We don't know yet. That's one of the things we'll be looking at."

Steroids have been linked to the deaths of several professional wrestlers in recent years. Eddie Guerrero, one of Benoit's best friends, died in 2005 from heart failure linked to long-term steroid use.

The father of Curt "Mr. Perfect" Hennig blamed steroids and painkillers for Hennig's drug overdose death in 2003. Davey Boy Smith, the "British Bulldog," died in 2002 from heart failure that a coroner said was probably caused by steroids.

Benoit was a quiet, roughhewn figure amid the glitz and bluster of pro wrestling. He performed under his real name, eschewed scripted personas and didn't bother to fix a gap where he had lost one of his front teeth. (According to the WWE Web site, he lost the tooth while roughhousing with his pet Rottweiler.)

His signature move was the "Crippler Crossface," in which he would lock his hands around an opponent's face and stretch his neck.

He met his wife in the 1990s when she was married to rival wrestler Kevin Sullivan. As part of the scripted rivalry, Benoit and Nancy were supposed to act as if they were having an affair. A real romance blossomed, and she left Sullivan for Benoit.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.

"We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm," said Alaina Jones, who lives across the street.

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people," he said.

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who had received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said fellow Canadian Bret Hart, a five-time champion.

The WWE canceled its live "Monday Night RAW" card in Corpus Christi, Texas, after the bodies were discovered.

Monday's show was supposed to be a memorial service for WWE owner Vince McMahon. In a storyline concocted by the WWE, McMahon was supposedly "assassinated" in a limousine explosion two weeks earlier. McMahon appeared at the beginning of Monday's telecast and acknowledged the bombing was made up.

The McMahon storyline has been dropped.

The really note-worthy point that I think may be new, is, in this horrid tragedy, if anything, at least it woke McMahon up in that he realized that his storyline was in bad taste and should go away. At least I think (As sad as it would be, I would almost see McMahon continuing it because he wants to try to pretend that the three hour tribute DIDN'T happen out of desperation).

-Shepherd Smith on Fox News, when introducing the press conference, referred to Chris Benoit as "this Chris Benoit character," ran down the ways each died, and said now steroids are suspected as having triggered his actions.

-Lt. Pope said after a call for a "welfare check" prompted by WWE, they found all three bodies in the home mid-afternoon. He said autopsies have been performed and it is being considered a homicide-homicide-suicide. They said he murdered his wife by affixiation as far back as Friday, then his son Daniel the next day, then hanged himself likely on Sunday. He said toxicology reports can take up to several weeks to obtain. During questioning, he said there was no suicide note. He stuck with the term "asphyxiation" for the way both Nancy and Daniels died. He said Benoit was arrested for DUI in the past. He said there were no calls to his current residence for domestic abuse. A reporter asked if steroids or illegal substances were found. He said a lot of prescription medication he received from doctors with what they believed were legal prescriptions. When again pressed on whether steroids were found, he said he can't give them a list yet. He then said there were anabolic steroids when asked a third time. Regarding motive, he said they would not go into that at this time. Regarding the text message, he said he text messaged a friend and the friend saw it several hours after it was received by his phone. He would not go into the content of it. According to the doctor, several hours passed, no more than a day, between the son's death and Benoit's suicide by hanging. The wife's body was found in the office area, Daniel in his bedroom, and Benoit in the basement home gym. He estimated close to a full day between killing his wife and son. He said there was no evidence of Nancy resisting. The doctor from the crime lab estimates Nancy died some time on Friday. He turned questioing over to Fayetteville County D.A. Scott Ballard.

-Ballard said he is struck by the fact that a seven year old boy is dead. "I don't think we'll ever be able to wrap our minds around it completely," he said. He said the timing was bizarre because of the time that elapsed between the deaths of the two victims and the suicide. "It struck me as somewhat bizarre that he would even be in the home with their deceased bodies for some time, but we don't know that; we haven't verified it." He said there was a Bible placed next to the bodies of each of the victims. He said Nancy was bound by her feet and wrists and there was some blood under her head in what he felt was a family room upstairs. She was wrapped in a towel. There were no such body treatments of the son, who was found in his upstairs bedroom. He said he had no idea about the motive. "I'm baffled why anyone would kill a seven year old baby. I have no idea about a motive." He said there was no evidence he was trying to hide the bodies. No 9-1-1 calls came from the house. He said he didn't know anything about Chris telling WWE he had a family emegency to deal with. He said at this point they are all pretty confidence it was a murder-suicide, they will "alert to any evidence to the contrary." He said they will reexamine everything when the toxicology reports comes back. He said it would probably more than two weeks, though. He reconfirmed steroids were found in the residence. He said he didn't know if there were firearms in the house.

-Fox News anchor Smith then summarized the press conference and what it reconfirmed or revealed. He said he missed "one of those PPV things the WWE folks do." He added: "We have reason to believe he was a steroid user." He said steroids were present in the home. "With a doctor's prescription - you bet - but they were there." He discussed the situation with reporter Trace Gallagher regarding "roid rage." He wondered how long it can go on and how long it can last. "We're look at three separate incidents of roid rage over the course of three days," said the reporter. Dr. Steven Garner was interviewed. He said roid rage can cause such incidents. He said there are very few documented cases, but there are strange stories related to steroids. He said, "There people develop psychosis and that's a total break with reality. They don't know what they're doing. They halucinate. They don't know what they're doing. They hear voices in their heads telling them to kill people." He explained that once a user get off steroids, his testicles cannot return to producing testosterone at a normal level and depression can result - leading to suicide with teenagers. A former homicide investigator was interviewed next. He said he has been on scenes where he's seen people trip out due to steroids. "They get this unbearable strength and they seem to lose their mind," he said. "If they drink alcohol at the same time, it adds to it. It's taken about six or seven officers at scenes I've been at to hold a guy down who was flipping out from roid rage." Smith said: "Think about this guy. This guy's sitting in his house with a dead wife, then he's got a dead kid, then he's dropping Bibles all over the place. Then he's killing himself. You can't even process that." The doctor said steroids mixed with other prescription drugs make it much worse. They went on to note that "60 wrestlers" have died under the age of 45. "It's astounding. Astroniomically astounding. Nobody really focuses on it because wrestling is kind of a circus, an athletic soap opera. We don't really care about the players, apparently, because this is a continual cycle or drugs, road shows, alcohol, and they're travelling 250 days a year. The more wild your show is, the more money you make. That in the end turns out to haunt you. The doctor said typically wrestlers take more steroids than their should. Reporter Trace Gallagher and Shep Smith agreed that WWE is "under the fence." They brought up the HBO Real Sports interview where Vince McMahon got mad at the subject being brought up. "I know it's entertainment and it's not regulated the same way professional athletics are, but somebody is going to pay hell if this turns out the way we think it is."

Bill Simmons of ESPN.com wrote in his blog that the Benoit Family Tragedy is the single biggest sports story of the year, even though, as he notes, pro wrestling isn't technically a full-fledged sport.

Benoit was one of the 12-15 greatest wrestlers of the past 30 years. For the wrestling world, it's like the OJ thing all over again - only its worse because his little son was involved. It might be the single worst sports story since the Rae Carruth thing.

Bill Simmons: (3:43 PM ET ) The weird part was the WWE inexplicably running the 3-hour Benoit tribute on Raw last night - by the time it re-aired on the West Coast, reports were starting to come out that it was possibly a double murder-suicide... I don't know how they let that show continue to run. One of the weirdest TV moments ever. I was really creeped out.

In speaking with close friends and confidants of Chris Benoit contacted this afternoon, apparently there were some warning signs that something was wrong with Benoit.

Some of the information learned by 1Wrestling.com by colleagues and friends that did not want to be quoted:

"This wasn't roid rage, this was insanity. Roid rage doesn't last for 48 hours. There were signs that something was wrong. Stories have emerged that a year ago he became paranoid and believed he was being followed. He wouldn't let Nancy leave the house because he believed someone was out to get them."

“Chris hated religion. He didn't believe in it. I cannot comprehend him putting bibles by the bodies. I am shocked.”

In addition, 1Wrestling has learned that sources close to Nancy are reporting that she had a safety deposit box with evidence of past rages and that authorities should check the box if anything ever happened to her.

PWTorch can now report the content of the text message sent by Chris Benoit to Chavo Guerrero on Sunday morning. The message, according to our sources, said that the sliding glass doors to his house were open and the dogs had been fed. No one was quite sure what to make of it, but he wasn't reachable afterward for clarification.

As a friend said to me...he fed his DOGS?

Also...not so good news for Vince:

ESPN.com reports that D.A. Scott Ballard said Daniel Benoit, Chris and Nancy Benoit's seven year old son, had needle marks on his arm. They believe he had been given growth hormone because one or both of them believed he was undersized.

ESPN.com also reports that Ballard said:

-Benoit hanged himself from the pulley of a piece of exercise equipment. Benoit used weights, the pulley, and a cable to choke himself to death.

-The decomposition of the bodies was staggered enough for them to determine the staggered times of death.

-Regarding the text message Benoit sent, he said: "And our assumption is that that was an effort to try to get somebody to come find the bodies after the suicide. That is our assumption."

Very chilling, very sad. This is, again, probably the darkest day in pro wrestling. given what was just said, even pro wrestling will take a huge hit on all of this (deserved or not).

I was thinking about htis even more, and honestly, Vince couldn't win either way.

Had he not done the tribute and waited, he would have been bashed for "HAVING" to continue the event when both wrestlers and fans alike were still reeling from the shock of what happened (I need only reference Martel's death as an example).

To add to it all, supposedly it looks like his son was in some sort of a choke hold. Of all things...people are guessing that it might have been...the crossface.

Thing is though, are they going to edit him out of the DVDs entirely? And what CAN they do about Mania 20? I mean, seriously, are they going to go to crowd sports each time Benoit does something? And do they just suddenly cut to the end and say "A third wrestler won the match. He later lost to Randy Orton"?

I'm not surprised be is out of the Raw Vs Smackdown! game...that is to be expected. I am presuming his DVD will also be taken out of production. I wonder if the WWE will even go to the point to edit past autobiographies to take out what people said about him. I do wonder what Bret will say about him in his book, or Jericho too. Bret wrestled Benoit in the tribute match to Owen (which again, makes all of this so much harder to deal with).

well dagget, looks like you might get your wish. Supposedly Edge has a torn pec and they are thinking of having him forfeit the title and there be a battle royal to determine the new champ who will defend this Sunday. The question is...WHO IS LEFT?!?!?!?! Role call!

Man, Batista has THE LUCK), and Orton (if he were to go to Smackdown!, which would take care of his plans for a feud with HBK, HHH, and Cena for the title). After that, well, yeah...

Edit: Jeez, I mean, I am going to FINALLY be able to watch wrestling on regular T.V. after over two years, and now THIS is going to happen:

PWInsider is reporting that with tonight's Smackdown taping in Laredo, TX set to see Edge forfeit the World Heavyweight Title due to a pectoral injury, the plan as of right now is to have The Great Khali win the World Title tonight in the scheduled Battle Royal main event to determine a new champion.

I was disappointed when Taker got injured and had to give up the strap. However, Edge I felt would be fun to watch. Now THIS? There goes Smackdown! for me, and as for Raw, well, I don't care about Cena, I don't care about Lashley, I don't care about Orton, and that is what on the horizon for the next few months. Seriously, couldn't this crap have happened SIX FREAKIN WEEKS LATER?!?!?! So much for watching pro wrestling on television again after an absense of two years. Blah.

Also, can you imagine poor Kane? I envision the scenario now.

Vince: "Gentlemen, as you know, Edge is injured. We decided to go a new route with regards to champion."

Kane (thinking to himself): "Alright! Taker's gone, HHH isn't here, HBK isn't here, kennedy is on Raw, Cena is on Raw, Big SHow is gone, Edge is injured, Mysterio is injured, and Batista just held the title a few months back. I mean, MAYBE he'll be picked, but if not him, surely me with my good work-rate, my good attitude despite those stupid angles over the past decade, and the fact that it's almost been ten years since my last world title, AND I was about to face Edge IN THE MAIN EVENT for the world title! Finally!"

Vince: "Well, as you know, we have to decide who will carry the Smackdown! banner. Now, I thought about this carefully, and Batista, I know you would be a good candidate, but I think we need to go a new direction! Don't worry, you'll be in the main event though this Sunday..."

Kane (thinking to himself): "YES! It all comes to me now!"

Vince (walks over to Khali): "...Khali, originally you were going to face Batista this Sunday, but those plans will have to change...."

Kane (thinking to himself): "YES!"

Vince: "...because we have decided YOU will win the world title!"

Kane (thinking to himself): "WTH?!?!?!?!?"

Vince: "Good! I like to see motivation in part of my employee's! In some sad news, John Kronus passed away. For those of you that were post-ECW, you probably don't know him, but he was part of the tag team with Perry Saturn, which was a pretty decent tag team. He also is the guy that you seedoing that foot-sweep/round-house kick combination on the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD when they briefly co-promoted with the WWE back in 1997.

How ironic that my first Raw (yes, I did watch Raw afterall) in over two years is reportedly theLOWEST RAW SINCE THE DARK DAYS OF 1997. They got a rating of 2.5 or something like that. Amazing too when we managed to see Cena job to someone (even though it was not for the title).

Also, add anothernto the injury list. Lashley is out. Good thing (I guess) they didn't put the title on him, least both world titles would be the 'titles of doom' (that still makesm e wonder about Khali and Smackdown! Given the curse of the world title (those who heldi t get injured), were they foolish enough to give it to someone as limitd and prone to injury as Khali, or was a clever,wise move in which they knew that if the curse continued, they might as well get it (as sick as it sounds) on someone who is already likely to be injured?).

The problem with Santino is he came out as a fan who seemingly won the IC title from someone who had beaten various legends and world champions, as well as squashed many others.

Slash: If I followed the storylines correctly (I have only been able to watch Raw the last two weeks), Santino represented a fan (of course, in an angle) whom pinned Umaga (who has beaten Triple H, HBK, Cena, Kane, and others) for the title. The idea of a 'fan' (yes, I know he is not a fan) beating someone of the caliber (with regards to whom he has defeated) of Umaga to me puts Santino in a negative light as it cheapens the title, cheapens the character of Umaga, and cheapens overall the idea of pro wrestlers having to be trained to compete (again, yes, I realize this is all an angle).

Slash: I know that. It's the idea of an 'out-of-the-blue fan' holding any title (save for very, VERY special circumstances) but more specifically one that for many years meant you were the number two wrestler in the WWE/F, and at least since 2002ish of the Raw brand. Had they had an angle where he was a fan who had a dream come true and became a wrestler, followed by some matches, and THEN won the title via fluke with the aid of Lashley, that would have been a bit better (although probably he still wouldn't have had the fan support).
