Metallica is strange...They do their best work when they're young, hungry and underground and then make a conscious effort to totally suck once they're noticed for their best work (as opposed to groups that just lose their edge/inspiration). Although I was aware of them, I got into their music very late. It took time for their first four albums to grow on me (I had never heard much thrash), but they're all great and I feel like I get something new out of them every time I go through them (Ride the Lightning being my favorite) But man...I felt my eyes just fucking dropping during every Black album song I came across and Load/Reload were *skip* *skip* *eh, kinda cool, but skip* *skip* *aw fuck it! recycle bin!* I finished the St Anger download, read about the lack of guitar solos and it's still sitting in my pile of crap to listen to (like, as opposed to being excited about it). Amazing, considering 3 of their main members have been there the whole time.

It comes down to this...They don't have to top Ride the Lightning with this one, but it better at least be comparable to the Testament/Death Angel albums from this year (and Warbringer's album, which I'm totally in love with ATM) I don't have time for *skip* *skip* *eh, kinda cool, but skip* *skip* *aw fuck it! recycle bin!* from a bunch of has-beens. *see Def Leppard and Song from the Sparkle Lounge...cringe*

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I have to say, the vocals leave a lot to desire. Musically it's alright, but vocally Hetfield seems very forced to me.
Yeah, I just caught it...Honestly can't believe this is the same guy from the 80's (maybe he's lost his voice?) The last four minutes or so are cool though. I actually really liked the solos.

Heard Cyanide on youtube as well and...uh, *skip*.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I mean, I'll download the thing and hope for the best based on their first four albums, but I won't keep it just for the sake of it being Metallica and I'll just get rid of it if it doesn't meet my expectations. If that happens, I hope its' inevitable success (whether it sucks or not) gives the other thrash bands out there motivation to kick it up a notch.

I think "playing to two audiences" is just a very kind way of saying, "you fuckers sold out".

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Honestly...

Truthfully...

I like it so far. In fact, "The End of the Line" and "My Apocalypse" are as good as some of the classic Metallica songs I like. Hetfield doesn't sound as bad as "The Day That Never Comes" in these, although he does sound different. Still listening, but considering how skeptical I was, the fact that I'm still listening is a good thing.

I like that the whole loudness war thing is being brought to the public eye because of this album. I downloaded the GH rip and it sounds great.

I realize I have sufficiently made my point about questionable mastering and am just being a whiny baby at this point.
