Nice..."Rain in Blood" got added as well. I imagine "Angel of Death" would have broken too many guitar controllers.

Hoping for "Ride the Lightning" or "Enter Sandman" for the Metallica slot. Also want to see Megadeth come back for another round. It'd be counterproductive if we gain Metallica and Slayer, but lose Megadeth from GH...Also, I'd like a Motley Crue song that's actually fun to play, instead of boring, old "Shout at the Devil".

Really looking forward to this one. I was sold as soon as they announced "Welcome to the Jungle". Oh and an appearance by Slash doesn't hurt. Not everyday god graces a videogame.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Anyway, what was up with that 80s thing? I hope it's not a sign that bonus songs are going away because I enjoyed a lot of them.
I don't know...I'm an 80's whore (and a lot of my favorite bands are on it...yay, Poison!), but 30 songs or so for $50 is a ripoff. $30...maybe. Hopefully, it'll drop in price by the time GH3 comes around. I hear GH3 will be closer to 70-ish songs.

Megadeth should go the Velvet Revolver route and try to get one of the songs from their recent album in. That's good marketing right there, on VR's part (and "She Builds Quick Machines" is a great song anyway). "Washington is Next!" would do just fine with me.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I don't even know how people can do that. Hitting the right notes is the least of my worries when I can't even strum that fast.
Learn to strum up and down. I can't handle a lot of songs on hard yet (just got it about a week and a half ago), but it works so much cleaner than just downstrokes and it really makes a difference when the stuff comes flying at you at high speeds (and especially during excessively long chains of a single note/chord). I sometimes strum too fast for medium speed now without realizing it.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Okay, I'm officially hyped for this..."Talk Dirty to Me" (Poison) has been confirmed to be in it. Can't wait to see the solo section for that one.

"CC...Pick up that guitar and'a...TALK TO ME!" (Song fails 7 seconds later under barrage of notes). Can't wait for the masochism!

On the same hand...I wonder where the Rock Band updates are?

Enceph: Yeah, I think a lot of the "grassroots" feel of GH2 might be lost for stuff with higher production values. As long as they don't screw up the main gameplay though, I'll be playing this for a long time. The boss battles look like a cool addition to the main gameplay.

I'm pulling for Zeppelin/Stairway too, but I don't foresee it being the beast Freebird was if it gets in. Maybe as an encore for level 3-5, but not the "final boss" song.

Then again... I was never able to rationalize why, of all of Aerosmith's songs, they chose Last Child as an encore in GH2.
Enlarged for emphasis. Terrible choice. I don't even listen to it on my Aerosmith comp and there's nothing that stands out about actually playing it. "Walk This Way" was made for being featured in GH.

Similarly...If they're going to insist on shoving Nirvana in all of these games, where is Teen Spirit?

Even though I never really got into them, I'm glad to see the series branching out into other languages.
Considering Midori (the new character) and the type of gameplay the series is rooted in, I'd say we can expect at least one Japanese song as well for the final tracklist. I'm actually surprised there isn't a Japan-only edition of GH. I wonder how this game is received over there...

But yeah, never heard of any of the European bands in the update either (I've HEARD of Lacuna Coil, but haven't heard any of their songs).

I'm just hoping the remaining 24 slots or so aren't just no-name local bands and they have some more big surprises. And who is this other recognizable guitarist they promise going to be? Money's on either Buckethead or Eddie Van Halen (especially with the big reunion).

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Sorry to say, but given the choice between my favorite bands and another group of no-names like in GH2 with about 3 songs between them I'd listen to IRL (and one of them being "Jordan" with BH not exactly being a no-namer)...I'm pulling for the big label guys here to fill out the tracklist. The best thing about GH is playing songs you actually want to hear IRL (and finding new ones at that...Wolfmother = <3)...Which is why I'm probably one of the only people who can justify the pricetag of Rock the 80's, since I like 90% of the songs (Holy Diver is the only song I can't stand and while I like We Got the Beat and Wrathchild, there are better Go-Go's/Iron Maiden songs...We Got the Beat is actually pretty obnoxious to play). That, and the delicious irony of playing "Turning Japanese" is almost worth the price of admission.

Random questions: Does anyone know anything about a demo, preferably the PS2 version? And how late was GH2's songlist finalized before it was actually released?

Shit... The fuck do you know about music?
Well (the bands/songs I already knew I liked aside) the bands I didn't know or hadn't heard in the main setlist (which, admittedly, was quite a few) generally had good songs, while I was torn between buying new outfits/characters/guitars and what I heard of the bonus songs. Does that count as musical knowledge?

Nothing against indie labels, I'd just rather increase my chances of finding songs I like and want to play in the game.

I was hoping for something along the lines of GH Encore: Neoclassical Shredfest (Marty Friedman, Malmsteem, Becker, Satriani, etc). That'd be some serious fun.

Well I've heard that the EU version will have Helloween as one of the "exclusive" artists.
...

Fuck, lucky bastards. Everytime I hear "We Damn the Night" or "I'm Alive", I think how perfect they'd be for GH. Or better yet..."Seven Keys". 13 minutes of hand-cramping goodness.

Goldfish, I think one of the points of the game is to let people play along to titles they know and love, not to sell some artist's generic "rock" song. I could list a hundred Classic Rock artists that would go well with the game.
I...don't understand what this is in response to. If anything, I agree with this statement (which is why I said I'd rather see "familiar" bands than indies).

It was in response to your reply to wvlfpvp. And I don't just mean a bunch of overrated AC/DC songs. Dueling banjos, for Christ's sake. Led Zeppelin, etc. You'd think that with the size of a DVD or Blu-Ray disk, they could put TONS of songs on these. Cramming it full of songs we've never really heard of isn't what most people want. Yes, some hardcore players will want something challenging, but the majority of people playing simply want songs that they're familiar with.
Didn't I basically say that?

(I think wvlfpvp was being sarcastic, in response to my "no-name" bands comments...My clock-loop response just treated that literally, since you can't discover something new if you keep listening to the same thing obviously)

And...AC/DC is not overrated.

Woohoo...Midnight release on the 27th, along with a tournament at Gamestop.

On the other hand...Boo! No PS2 demo! Although, I like the look of the wireless guitar for the PS2 more than the Les Pauls on the other systems. If I burn through my GH2 SG Gibson, I have a solid alternative. Although, on second look, that select button looks awfully close to the whammy bar...

And finally...BOOO! We go from 2 confirmed Velvet Revolver songs to...none. Guess a confirmation from Duff isn't good enough. I wish they'd confirm the final song list (hoping they get the rumored Megadeth song)

I've pretty much given up hopes of being an awesome Guitar Hero. My pinky doesn't feel like cooperating with me half the time while also my PS2 is DYING as I have a little lag sometimes going on a few random times.
Yeah, same here...I fired my pinkie and I just shift my other three fingers down the frets whenever possible (I only use it when I get a scale of 4-5 notes in a row). That was when my scores started to improve a lot. I've got to the point where I feel like I'm mashing, then I look up and I still have a streak alive. Then I overstrum from the excitement.

I'll probably end up online, since I'm really interested in Rock Band (and Puzzle Fighter!), but for now, it's PS2 for me. No plans on cracking the leaderboards, unless I get snowed in and I end up with endless free time to get amazing at it.

Heh, I like how "Talk Dirty to Me" is one of the 1st Tier songs this time around, when "Nothin' But a Good Time" was a fifth tier song in Rock the 80's.

Damn, reading all this makes me want to chip my PS2 instead of waiting the 20-some hours for the midnight launch. *Sigh* Guess I can always do another 1P run on II to get ready.

I think I'm one of those players who'll just end up being totally content with playing around on hard mode. My fingers hurt just watching all those 3-note chords (hopefully the GYO ones are in the vast minority).

Got it. Midnight launches are awesome (unless you're a Gamestop employee...I asked if they were getting overtime and the guy just gave me a dirty look). About 80 people showed up. The tourney was at 11 or so and I missed, but oh well.

Played the first set on medium to get a feel for the new surroundings and all the songs I don't know, before I delve into hard and beyond. First impressions:

-Wow, they weren't kidding when they said they made it much more lenient on the timing. I know it'll get harder, but it's really easier to mash out strings of notes than GHII. I got 100% on 3/4 of the songs I just played and half of that was messing around with the new timing...Everything connected. I can see someone starting on GHIII, then having problems with GHII. I haven't noticed HOPO's being greatly different, though just easier due to the higher window to hit a note. Medium speed seems closer to GHII's hard speed...It's nowhere near as slow.

-I can't say I'm a fan of the new interface. Just doesn't feel as tongue-in-cheek as the interface in GH2 and it's kind of boring, actually. Even the letters and everything just look over-polished. The band is just fucking ugly (Midori has that hideous American-Manga look and is more creepy than kawaii...And I wish I use 80's Judy instead of the one here...yeesh!) and the cast looks like it got beat with an ugly stick. Even if I weren't a Poison fan, I'd use Bret Michaels instead of the main singer. Be nice if I could do something with the drummer. And dammit...I miss the board shaking when I use star power. Even the messages are kind of lame (and three songs in, I've even had one repeat).

Feels kind of like jumping from Marvel vs Capcom 1 to Marvel vs Capcom 2...Evolved gameplay, but the aesthetics take a massive hit.

One plus...The new star power meter is nice. I just glance over and see how many lights I have. I like it.

But who plays GHIII for the aesthetics? It's awesome so far otherwise.

Yeah, boss battles are awful. The last one was the worst...No powerups until, like, 2 minutes into the song and I don't have enough to kill him. And the fucker always hits me with the lefty switch (aka: mash buttons and hope you hit notes). And what good does increasing the CPU's difficulty level do or giving them more notes do!? Gimme a whammy or broken string attack!

Other than that...Awesome, as expected.

Urge to buy rising. I loved Guitar Hero II, but time is such a constraint these days.
That's one reason I'm all over the GH games right now...They're so damn arcadey. No storyline, just pick up and play a few songs, then shut it off. Or switch over to the ballgame, then play a song during a commercial, then flick back. I don't have time to spend 3 hours clearing a level in a 40-50 hour game. I'm sure the big casual game craze right now is partly responsible for selling so many copies of GH...That's on top of it being as addictive as it is.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Long story short: He's a bitch and you don't even get the song outside of a battle. Yuck.

Slash is god, but I hope I never have to face off against him again. Though surprisingly, I liked Morello's original a lot more than Slash's...

Barracuda gave me trouble on hard, but only because you're hitting those damn triples every couple seconds through the whole thing. I just took my 3 stars and got past it and probably won't bother with it again unless I have to. Heart doesn't strike me as a band to build a GH grid around anyway. Seems the 2nd tier usually has a few gameplay clunkers (Message in a Bottle/Heart-Shaped Box in II, that stupid Limozeen song in 80's).

Crap, I didn't know you could stock up on attacks. I figured it was like Mario Kart and I just emptied them on the CPU because I was afraid they'd get replaced by another I'd pick up.

My favorite song thus far is probably "She Bangs the Drums"...Cool song, really fun pattern all the way through. Really liked "3's and 7's" on medium (and the song itself), but it pwns me pretty badly on hard. And "Talk Dirty to Me" is a great warm-up song, like "Strutter" was in GH2. And I got my money's worth when I hit on "Welcome to the Jungle".

Not sure if I'm a fan of "One" or not...It's kind of like GH3's Freebird with the structure, but the last two minutes of that one pattern (G's, following by a triple) and the solo (filthy stuff) seem like kind of a weak payoff for the rest of the song.

*should've been "Ride the Lightning"

MUST. PLAY. MORE.

I must give props to those who can play on Hard/Expert. I've been able to get through a few songs on Medium (trying to beat "One" right now). Sometimes I wonder how I manage to get some of the notes. Its like my fingers just happen to move of their own free will or something. It creeps me out. =/
I'm finding out...Speed is good thing in this edition. In the previous games, you had to hit the gems much closer to the center. Now it's more lenient and on expert speed, I almost can't miss as long as I don't let the gems by (obviously). I'm almost mashing instead of timing my strums. Of course, that's offset by the upped difficulty and many more notes, but I think I might mess around with Hyper Speed for hard mode, because I'm hitting basic strings of notes much easier with the speed boost on expert.

Anyone think you die a little too quickly?. I got to 97% on "Rock You Like a Hurricane", missed a wave and a half of notes and I died...I was borderline green/yellow at the time.

What do people think of "Impulse"? Nice seeing the "made specifically for GH" thing continue...Not the killer Jordan was, but it zapped me out of nowhere on Expert at 67%. I beat it on hard though without too much trouble. Mmm yeah...JUST like Jordan.

And I'm loving this stupid Superbus song...Not hard (even on expert), but fun. And catchy.

The Slayer song is hard, but not in the "I'm having fun" kind of way. That and the One solo actually feel kind of ridiculous...Shame, since I regularly listen to both.

I gotta say, the upper tiers on the other GH games were a lot more fun than GHIII so far...Easier yes (for the most part), but Hangar 18, Beast and the Harlot, Seventeen, Freebird and Electric Eye were actually a blast to play. One is kinda like a limp Freebird and Raining Blood can go back to hell (and "Number of the Beast" is the same stupid 3-note chord through half the song and I can't even get to the scream on expert) Oh well, Cliffs of Dover is great at least and 3's and 7's could easily be a final tier song and is pretty fun.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Rule #1
Rule #2
Rule #3
"
"
Rule #99:

Don't panic, just instinctively mash the frets as the notes come. I used to panic everytime a wave came at me (hello "Woman" on hard/expert), but one day I started goofing around and mashed them out and didn't really worry if I missed. I can do them pretty consistantly now...I even FCed "Talk Dirty to Me" and the end HOPO section in a store demo. The three people watching thought I was a GH god. Good times...

I bought GH1 a few days after GHIII and man...World of difference. Seems like a 50/50 shot I get them in GH1, but they come out almost by accident in III. Good luck on "One" though...

The Romantics sue Activision - PlayStation 2 News at GameSpot

Not GHIII, but better than bumping the other GH thread.

LOL at stupid lawsuit "Made Famous By The Romantics"...I hate the song ingame (one of the worst patterns in any GH game) and I'm tired of hearing it in every other commercial, but I'd hate it even more if it caused GH: RT80's to get pulled from shelves.

Quote:
According to the Detroit Free Press, the band's attorney has said that copyright <of "What I Like About You">is not the issue, since Activision secured permission for a cover version through the proper channels. Attorney William Horton said, "It's a very good imitation, and that's our objection. Even the guys in the band said, 'Wow, that's not us, but it sure sounds like us.'" He added, "The sales of this game are huge. We're all for good commerce. We just want to share in it."
Solution? Just use this instead and call it a day: YouTube - Poison-What I Like About You!

Considering that GH3 hard is supposed to be GH2's Expert, I'm quite proud of myself. I shudder to think about what the final boss battle will be like though.
Eh, not quite...I wouldn't say there's any early hard GH3 song I've had to star power through like I still do on "Mother" in expert in GH2 (a tier 1 song), and there's nowhere near as many 3-note chords or just simply "WTF, why is that $*&#ing note here!?" patterns. You'll be surprised when you make the jump to expert eventually how much of a bastard it can be.

Keep plugging away though and the zen will come. Keep practicing "Talk Dirty to Me", which looks slightly intimidating at first, but it's a great hard training song for fast, continuous strings of notes/chords, orange fret usage, and one that doesn't almost require double-strumming (but you can still practice it for later songs, where you practically need it to hit everything). I always use to warm-up/impress people at store demos()

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I can understand playing the game for fun a couple of times, but practicing to get real good is no use I think. If you have time to practice imitating to play the guitar it's just better to practice playing the real deal because it's more rewarding in the end.
True, but maybe people just enjoy playing the game? You could make the same argument for any type of game (like, why bother with Grand Theft Auto when you can SHOOT PEOPLE, STEAL CARS AND KILL HOOKERS FOR REAL?)

Although I have to admit...I think GH made using my index and ring finger together a lot easier on a real guitar. My hand doesn't cramp up like it used to when I started and it feels a lot more natural. Plus, I think GH is a good way for people to gain an appreciation of just what a real guitarist is doing, where notes are (like how constant greens simulate strumming the low E string), how fast you have to make transitions on the fretboard and how many notes a real guitarist is firing off, especially when you can barely hit enough to pass on a simplified toy.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
