This may be an myth from the days when HardDrives didn't automatically park their heads. Also, leaving your computer on will consume a lot of electricity, and that isn't too good for the environment. If you know you don't need to leave it on overnight, it may be worthwile (for the planet's sake) to simply turn it off.
