Yep, it's from The Third. But it's not the growing wings scene, it's actually when they are first introduced in episode one as the are about to attack Ikus. Never did finish watching this show though. I should get to it.

My second guess will be Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto. I remember seeing a temple image such as this one relating to that show. Plus, it did start in 2006.
