If you like evolution of styles then you should go Dream Theater and Helloween. I know i always pitch those two, but from what you're describing, it sounds like you should at least give them a shot. If you want more info, just ask me.
If you really into bands that aren't afraid to evolve, you really should try Rush, but many people will say their not metal, and judging by the bands you've listed above, i'm thinking that they're not the band for you. Regardless, they're terrific musicians and never fail to amaze me. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I also really enjoy Coheed and Cambria. Dream Theater sounds like it really work for you, as they have a rather wide range of styles they touch on, and have touched on in the past.
If you're not into Metal, then maybe stay away from Helloween, but i'd recomend at least giving Keeper of the Seven Keys Parts I and II a shot. If you listen to all kinds of music, then you NEED to check out Rush. They've established so many different sounds for themselves over the last thirty years you're bound to at least find one album you like. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Please, do tell what albums you have. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Helloween's Live on Three Continents DVD is set to release Feb. '07. Can't wait.
Also, if all goes acording to plan, Dream Theater, Helloween, and Rush will all have new albums out in '07 as well. Also picked up Majestic by Gamma Ray not too long ago. I've listened to it through about 4 times now, and i must say i'm impressed, but in a different way than normal. They're not as solo heavy as Helloween or nearly as much as Dream Theater. They put much more focus on packing as much energy in as they can, while still maintaining a catchy melody. Right now, i'd problem describe them as a more modern version of Iron Maiden, or a heavier Helloween. I must say, Hansen's voice has changed, and yet stayed comfortably familiar since his days as the Helloween front man. I really love the exileration i get from this album, and am really glad i finally got around to actually buying a full album of theirs. I suggest Gamma Ray to any metal lover, especially if you're into Iron Maiden or Helloween. Anyone agree? Disagree? I was speaking idiomatically. |
Ok, so in my absence from the metal thread my tastes have shifted and grown slightly.
I've been adding bands and styles to my tastes, bands like: Opeth Arsis Threat Signal Electro Quarterstaff Demons and Wizards 3 Inches of Blood Kamelot Charlie Dominici Derek Sherinian As well as other bands that aren't metal I've also found merit in death metal, and vocal styles that i previously shunned, as shown in Opeth, Arsis, and Threat Signal. I now officially call myself a fan of those bands. How ya doing, buddy? |
Ok, so i've started looking into some bands lately.
Evergrey From what i've heard, they sound like a Swedish version of Korn. Does anyone have any experience with them? They sound tollerable enough, but i've only really heard two tracks. Fates Warning Again, only heard a few tracks, and they were drastically different from each other. They seem to be quite an obscure band. According to Wikipedia they go way back, and contributed quite alot to the development of progressive metal. Shadow Gallery Haven't heard anything by them, but they keep coming up on lists of "bands similar to this one" when i look up bands i like. Anyone know anything about them? Pyramaze It's Matt Barlow's (Iced Earth's former vocalist) new band. I know absolutely nothing about them so any info would be good. Also, i'm just looking to expand my appreciation for metal in general, so if anyone has any suggestions or torrents or anything that would be much appreciated. Most amazing jew boots |
I've been really impressed with Rhapsody of Fire lately. I know they're not kosher in a lot of metal circles anymore, what for being cheesy and all that, but i found their hiatus did wonders for their sound, and that The Frozen Tears of Angels and From Chaos to Eternity were vast improvements on the train wreck that was Triumph or Agony. That said, Luca Turili's spin-off Rhapsody band (tragically titled "Luca Turili's Rhapsody" instead of something that would legitimize the "of Fire" addition like Rhapsody of Ice, or R of Thunder... just sayin') seems to be off to an adequate start. I won't condemn them for being less than they could have been, but it's much better than a worst case scenario.
I'm also really enjoying the new Devin Townsend, Epicloud, which is kind of surprising as i was preparing myself for a bit of a downturn following Deconstruction, assuming that Devin obviously wouldn't be able to top himself after such an accomplishment. Epicloud doesn't even try, and is content to be it's own thing, which i'm fine with. Heading down to HMV tomorrow to pre-order Coheed and Cambria's Afterman Part I, Kamelot's Silverthron, and Wintersun's Time I, all out this coming month. All of these will be interesting to hear as Coheed and Kamelot both suffered major member changes in the last year, and it's been 8 years since the last Wintersun. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I had the pleasure of playing two shows with Woods. My band opened for them in Regina and Saskatoon on two consecutive tour dates when our schedules crossed paths. They were awesome guys and great performers. The whole Winnipeg metal scene wore black armbands that christmas.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
When i say played shows with, i mean we opened for them. I wasn't on stage with them, although that would have been awesome. A good friend of mine was supposed to tour with them as their drummer, but the tragedy occurred later that month.
As for Grand Master (my band) we just released our debut album, titled The Dream Alive, in April which you can sample at our myspace. (the myspace has better tracks than our facebook page, but feel free to check that out too.) As for exclusives, this is a video from our CD release show. We covered Opeth's Bleak, with some friends. We're a three piece (the short haired guitarist, the drummer and the bassist/vocalist (me)) but we were joined on stage by our friend Ryan from Hoarfrost (death vocals) Mike from Soul Killing Female (Keyboards) and Mike from Endless Chaos (long haired guitarist). This is probably the most fun i've had on stage, and will certainly be hard to top.

We do our best not to be tied to a routine when writing songs, but we bill ourselves as a prog metal band and use that as our starting point. The first album is very much a grab bag of the random stuff we've been writing over the past few years. We're almost done writing the second album and it will have the same feel of variety, but there will be much more of a thrash/death influence. After that we're headed in yet a different direction but i'm not going to say too much now because we haven't really decided on anything yet.
I'm glad you like it. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
It's not bad. It's certainly a lot heavier (darker i guess is a better word) than a regular fan might be used to. I thought it was a bit of a disappointment when compared to Elysium (i really liked that album) but it's not as bad as Polaris.
