In my old apartment building, the alarm would go off once a month or so, and even though I lived on the 8th floor, I never evacuated, because once you left the building, the firemen wouldn't let you go back in. I just checked the hallway and looked outside for smoke, and went back to whatever I was doing.
My current apartment just has a smoke detector, so there aren't any building-wide false alarms. I have to unplug the detector when I cook fish, though, or it goes off. Jam it back in, in the dark.  |
