It's nothing to do with the technology of your phone. If your service provider offers dialtunes (As they're called over here) they work from any phone as I'm fairly sure the tune itself isn't stored on your handset.

I could be wrong though but then you'd seriously struggle to have bought a phone that can't play mp3s in the last three years.
