As is so often the case, I didn't really play much that came out this year. As such, this is destined to be a short list...

Ni No Kuni - PS3 - 35 points

Just about sneaking into 2013, Ni No Kuni ticked a lot of rpg boxes for me in that the story was largely ignorable, there was a mountain of collectible stuff and you could grind away forever for no reason if you so wished. It's charming, it's fun, it suffers perhaps from being too easy (The bonus extra boss which normally in jrpgs involves a special kind of arse rape for anyone who's not ground out an uber-character I killed with no particular strategy and not even my main team) and if they had stuck with the English accent for Oliver rather than weirdly making him the only American in the entire universe it would have been a lot better. Awesome game though, I really enjoyed it.

GTAV - PS3 - 35 points

After the crushing disappointment of GTAIV being a technical masterpiece completely devoid of hunour and lacking a lot in actual fun, GTAV was a fantastic return to form for the series. It's actually funny, the missions are varied and interesting and the radio stations have music on that makes you want to drive places rather than just getting taxis everywhere, although a longer playlist on each wouldn't have hurt. I never played the online mode because I'm old and grumpy now and don't really play online anymore, plus it crashed the one time I tried and that put me off but I guess if you're into that kind of thing it's fairly comprehensive. Hard game to top though.

Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed - PSVita - 10 points

Who doesn't like a cart racing game eh? Sonic racing was better than Little Big Planet Karting and had a decent mix of challenges in the story mode. Good addition to the genre.

Hotline Miami - PSVita - 20 points

Retro shooting awesomeness although it is perhaps the most frustrating game I played all year at times. The soundtrack is top notch and the game is helluva addictive, there's no excuse not to own this really.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
