I remember spending months and months of my life trying to beat Doom 2 on the hardest setting (Nightmare I think) but I reckon it was actually impossible without cheats. Not only did zombies and imps constantly spawn around you and being essentially 2D you only had left and right as dodging options, you simply didn't get enough ammo to kill even half of the enemies that you met. I think level 7 was the furthest I ever got, at which point you get jumped by about 20 spider demons and have basically no hope of leaving the room alive. Even with the cheats it'd take 20 minutes to kill them all and on the very last level, with God mode on, you had to finish the level in about 3 minutes otherwise the slowdown from the number of cyberdemons stomping around crippled my 486 DX2 down to an absolute crawl.

Also, I never finished Jet Set Willy, despite spending most of my time at primary and early secondary school attempting to do so. It was just so unforgiving and had a nasty habit of re-spawning you in front of monsters when you died. Tough, tough game that one.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
