The best battle system to my mind in that in Shin Megami Tensei:Lucifer's Call (Nocturne for you foreign types). Although at first glance it's pretty similar to many other rpgs, the difference is that in SMT you actually have to put a bit of thought into winning random battles. In the Final Fantasys of this world, battles more often than not require you to just repeatedly tap "Attack" over and over. If you find some monsters too tough to beat, you fight some shitty weak ones for half an hour until your stats are up to beating the tougher ones. In SMT however, you have to plan your party around the enemies you're facing. Simply improving your stats is rarely enough to swing a victory, it's the setup of skills that matters.
Basically, I find levelling up games insanely dull. Give me an rpg with a battle system that rewards thought over a high boredom threshold any day of the week.
As for music, I don't pay too much attention to it. Anything fairly quiet will do.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
