Your friend's house should suffice. I guess they assume kids are going to steal games, or perhaps use it as a method to verify they're of age, but your best bet is going to a buddy's house...or buying one at a game store that allows a 7-day return policy or something...

Are you defending someone for thinking that they can just say "I lost it" and expecting to not be charged for it? I doubt they're charged $600 and I doubt that they'd be dumb enough to agree to renting it, fully knowing the costs. If they don't pay or return it, they're referred to a credit agency. It's not stupid, it's ensuring people don't try retarded things like that to get "free" consoles.

Note that you're comparing decade-old systems to the pricing for the rather new stuff. You'll expect prices to rise.
