The construction seems to be limited from what I've seen, although I haven't tried engineer class much. Mostly it just appears you can place specific buildings in pre-defined locations: usually things like turrets for defence and artillary units. You can then of course use them once they're built to provide firing support.
I have a fairly midrange PC: X2 3800+ (overclocked to 2.6ghz, but I'm not sure if the game even uses dual core), 2GB of RAM, and a 7900gs card. The game runs fairly well, usually my framerate was 30 or a bit higher with everything on high, but there does seem to be some occasional stuttering and slowdown in odd spots for seemingly no reason at all, probably since the beta still needs optimisation. But I know someone that played the game on specs half of what mine are (along with a 6200 card) and they didn't mention anything about it being unplayably slow. The game looks fairly nice, although the lighting system doesn't seem all that impressive...which is ironic for a game running on the Doom 3 engine.
The game seems interesting, although a bit hard to really get the hang of and somewhat unpolished in its beta stage. There's a good variety of weapons though, with each class having a choice of 2-5 main weapons (with 5 classes for each of the two sides and different weapons for each). You also get upgrades as you gain experience from getting kills and accomplishing objectives, which allows you to do things like sprint faster, call in vehicle drops or airstrikes, lock-on with the rocket launcher faster, etc. For some reason the beta map got old fairly quickly though, not sure if the other maps will be more interesting.
If enough people say they're interested in this (whether you have a key for the beta or not), I'll go ahead and make that GFF Quake Wars signup thread in the multiplayer arena and we can organize something then.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
