Wow, I think I know that one, is it Adventures of Bayou Billy? I remember playing that way back when, the voice on the title screen was always funny since audio clips on the NES came out so crackly.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
OK then, continuing in the "tricky but not hard" tradition, here's one which should be recognizable by at least a few people:
![]() There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Qwarky is correct, Heart of the Alien. After posting it I realized it wasn't even released outside of the US. In the US the first game was called "Out of This World" instead of Another World as well.

I believe I remember seeing that in a gaming magazine...Braindead 13? The Dragon's Lair clone?
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Here's another one which is slightly obscure, but if you were a fan of the 3d space shooting genre back then you probably would have at least heard of it. Note that like Another World/Out of This World, it was named differently in each region, either name is acceptable.
![]() Most amazing jew boots |
Nope, wrong on both guesses. It does bare a similarity to those games, but it was released a bit after them (I think I remember seeing that Namco shooter you're thinking of though, it was in the arcades in the early 90s, right?). Here's anothing screenshot from the very start of the game, might jog some memories since most people that played it probably didn't manage to get to the level from the first image.
![]() Oh, and on the note of old games, I uploaded Heart of the Alien in ISO/MP3 format to sendspace for you Qwarky (and anyone else that wants the game). I use the Kega Fusion emulator for it and it works quite well: http://www.sendspace.com/file/75595p What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Well it was a console game, which should narrow it down a little since there weren't many consoles that would have graphics like that. It was one of the first space shooters that allowed you to destroy individual sections of capital ships, and had an interesting 2-player mode where one player drives the ship while the other player aims and shoots the gun. It was also extremely short.

A winner is you. Also known as Stellar Assault in Europe (yes, wonderfully original names they had there). The system is what made the game obscure more than anything else, it was one of the few good 32X games and for some reason it never got a sequel on the Saturn.

Hmm, I'm pretty certain it's from a cutscene, and it looks familiar, but I just can't recall what from. The lasers look straight out of Xenosaga (probably the third one), but I thought all the cutscenes in those games were fullscreen instead of letterboxed, so that doesn't seem likely. It also looks similar to Zone of the Enders 2, but I can't remember at what point that would've been in the game. I guess for now my vote goes for ZoE2.
Oh, and no problem Draconis, always glad to help where I can. How ya doing, buddy? |
Why the hell do the first two entries that come up in a web search of "nes fencing game" point to Harvest Moon and Jurassic Park? You've failed me Google.
For some reason it reminds me of an old Commodore 64 game though...but it looks more like an NES game from that screenshot. I'm guessing...Track and Field...2? There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Ohhhh, I think I know now, it confused me for a long time, but the Egyptian theme on the status bar gives it away. Power Slave, right?
Edit: damn, I take so long to write posts. Need to refresh before I reply to things... This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Hmm, that one I had to think about...my gut reaction was something else, but I realized it couldn't be that when I saw that the person was riding in the back of a vehicle and the game in the screenshot doesn't have a UI.
So the only other FPS type game that fits that look which I can recall is...Dead Man's Hand? I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Ack! It's...Lunar: Eternal Blue for the Sega CD. It confused me for a second because I had only played the Playstation version and thought "wait, I don't remember the game looking like that".
Edit: damn, got the characters from the two games mixed up. Can never remember which is from which Lunar game. I was speaking idiomatically.

Albert Oddysey! I never did finish the game, but the humor was great. I should dig it out and play it again sometime.

Here's a similarly odd game then, but one I actually played through completely and it did get a little attention when it was released (hint: it was one of the first games to use a certain accessory that had just been launched at the time)

You're quick...another point for you.

Onimusha: Warlords? The background is prerendered in that screenshot so it can't be 3 or Dawn of Dreams, and judging from the jaggies it's an earlier PS2 title (at least I don't RECALL 2 looking that bad...)
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
OK, here's an obscure one that I used to love even though it would make most people's brains explode:
![]() Sorry for the low quality screenshot, I can't find my copy of the game to get a screencap from. Edit: OK, guess not many people know this one. Here's a couple more screenshots to help jog people's memories, the last one will either make you recognize it easily or confuse you hopelessly. ![]() ![]() Another hint: the game recently received a sequel on the PSP in Japan. There's nowhere I can't reach.

You are correct, it is indeed Carnage Heart. One of the most interesting and unique games I've played, and yes the PSP game has a pretty different interface. Hope it gets a domestic release.

Might want to post a different one:
http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/ge...ost406293.html I'm amazed both of you posted different pictures of the exact same scene... I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I've never played the game, but it looks like Mystic Ninja 64 Staring Goemon for the N64.
Edit: damn, beaten to the punch. Although double-checking the image, the URL gives it away anyway. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Huh, the character reminds me of something I saw in Game Informer years ago...Shining Wisdom?
