What make Jackson's involvement in The Hobbit and that Silmarillion inspired prequel mandatory are not his skills as a director. He is very good, that's for certain, but not the single most talented guy who ever sat in that chair. But without Peter Jackson, there is also no Fran Walsh, no Philippa Boyens and I'm pretty sure no Andy Serkis (along with many other actors) and no Weta either. Preserving continuity with the trilogy in terms of cast, atmosphere and visuals will not be feasible without that team, it is just that simple.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
