Melty blood makes use of widely used concepts in fighting games such as cancels (cancelling an attack before its animation ends, then beginning another, allowing for more complex and damaging combos) chain combos (normal moves that can be link without the use of cancels) and the use of power bars (called Magic circuits in-game). Magic circuits serve more purposes than just allowing the execution of special moves. Chain combos are much easier to perform in comparison to other games, and it also brings other interesting features like simultaneous impacts and dash shielding among others. In addition, it brings the original concept of Shielding into gameplay.

Shielding is an advanced form of guarding. By tapping the shield button right before the moment of impact, the player cancels the opponent's attack, leaving the opponent wide open to attack. There are also Shield-only EX moves called "Last arcs." Last arcs are powerful attacks that cannot be blocked; they are activated automatically if the character shields while in "Blood heat" mode.

"Blood heat" mode is one of the variations of the magic circuit, the other being simply heat mode. A much more detailed explanation:

As mentioned earlier,Magic circuits work differently than in other fighting games. Magic circuits fill up with every connected attack the character performs, once the gauge reaches 300% the character goes automatically into Heat mode. While in heat mode the player can execute an Arc drive. An Arc Drive is an extremely damaging EX move which depletes the bar of the Magic Circuit gauge completely. Miyako Arima is the only exception, using just 150%. while the player is in heat mode he has the option of activating "Blood heat".Blood heat mode gives the player the ability to execute a much more damaging Arc drive,or activate the previously mentioned "Last arcs".Also,if the player has activated Blood Heat mode, the life gauge of his or her character will start to recover moderately fast,as long he/she is not guarding.

Other features used in Melty blood include:

Simultaneous impacts: serves as another canceling technique,if 2 characters hit each other at the same time they will cancel each other out, however the counter-attacks array that can be performed is very limited.

Dash Shielding: some Dash animations have a certain number of defense frames,if the opponent attacks the character while these certain frames are still activated,his/her attack is cancelled.

Aerial recovery: this can only be performed once your character has been thrown into the air and is falling towards the ground by tapping any button.by doing so the character will recover his/her standing animation and grant temporary invulnerability, mostly used to prevent an opponent from comboing.
I'm thinking of importing this. After a few videos I'm convinced that it's a great game, which greatly resembles Guilty Gear's feel. The expected release date is august the 10th, so roughly in 9 days time.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Don't you mean ness will "download" the game.

If you order it, I'll definitely import it as well. I'm sick of importing alone. I'm not really interested in Tsukihime at all, but the fighting system (like I said, which resembles Guilty Gear in a large manner) alone makes me want to purchase this.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Apparently he's buying it after all.

It's a solid fighting game, though a little easy to make combos compared to Guilty Gear.
I've heard that the combos are really, really easy to pull off. But that doesn't sound like a bad thing. I was skeptical at first but after seeing an endless amount of videos, the style looks awesome. I don't really enjoy fighters (2D or 3D) that're complex in their characters, which is why I've always been a fan of SNK titles.

A bonus for me is that one of my friends is also going to order this game from play-asia in a few weeks (when he isn't spending it on everything else coming out this month), so it doesn't really matter if the AI sucks.

I'll probably preorder this tomorrow.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

After a solid two hours before bed last night, I can confirm this game is awesome. I'm so glad I preordered it. The best thing about it that I can totally see my friend and I playing this for hours on end.

Currently, I used Akiha to beat single player on the hardest difficulty. I really like the button system and I managed to catch on pretty fast, even though I'm not really used to it yet.

All of the characters are quite unique, except for Nysvqr and Mech-Hisui, which resemble Eddie and Robo-Ky from GGXX#R way too much. That aside, Kohaku and Akiha are probably going to be my main characters for the time being.

The sprites aren't as flash as GGXX#R, but I'd say they're the next best thing. It's not like there's a huge demand for 2D fighters, so it's great to see such quality coming out like this.

Oh, and completing single player and seeing "Secrets unlocked: 1%" was lol. I'll need to get to work on this.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

The sprites look fine, and if you'd read what I said, they're probably the next best to GGXX.

And I haven't played the NAOMI port so how the fuck should I know. Chances are noone else has either.

How ya doing, buddy?

Kotaku rocks. I love this character, along with her moves. Her cactus attack is by far the best attack I've ever seen in any fighting game next to Servbot's super.

I've completed single player twice now, on the hardest difficulty. The second time I didn't even continue once. And my completion is.. 2%. I don't know how this unlock system works but it sounds like a slow and painful process.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
