Mixed Martial Arts V.2

MMA is becoming more mainstream these days, hopefully there are more GFFers that follow the sport now.

Want MMA info? Try www.sherdog.com or www.mmaweekly.com. Beware of the forums on SHERDOG.net, the people there are like the stupid kids on GameFAQS.

So, UFC 58 is tonight. GSP vs Penn is going to be a war. I'm definitely rooting for GSP. That guy needs to get another title shot. I also don't like Penn's arrogance. Also, GSP is from Montreal, gotta root for the hometown kid. Speaking of which, WAR CROW. I'd like to see him win, but Franklin's a good guy too.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Am I the only MMA Fan? So ya. . . UFC 58 was really good. Props to Hominick on his win over Yves Edwards. That was really unexpected. I'm glad that my boy GSP came out on top. I wrote him a nice email. A friend of mine knows his best friend and told me that he's going to try to get GSP to come out for drinks with us (awesome!). Loiseau took a beating, but hopefully he'll bounce back like GSP did after the Hughes loss and dominate his division, earning himself another title shot.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Letdown? Were you expecting anything else from that fight? I want to watch quality MMA bouts, like Silva vs Franklin. Also, it's going to be fun to watch Florian get dominated by Sherk.

I just watched a highlight video of Shinya Aoki... wow... that man has RIDICULOUS grappling skills.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

BS? More like Shogun doesn't know how to defend a takedown. That was a legit win for Coleman. Lay off the Haterade.

For some reason, I don't see the UFC fighters being as good as a lot of the PRIDE fighters. PRIDE seems a lot more dangerous, considering the difference in rules. Even though they can't throw elbows, they can do head stomps, and kicks to the head while they're on the ground. Not allowing elbows to the face is a better way to rule it IMO merely for the fact that I hate seeing matches called because of a cut over somebody's eye. Fedor Emelianenko's only loss in his MMA career was due to a match being called because of a cut. Also, I really don't see any UFC fighter being able to take on some of the PRIDE FC fighters like Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipović, or even Alexander Emelianenko.
Not as good as the Pride FC guys? It depends on the division. The UFC now has a pretty stacked LW division. I could see Sherk giving a lot of the guys in Pride trouble. Then there's Jens Pulver, Hermes Franca, Clayton Guida, Tyson Griffin, etc... Pride FC has more top 10 talent in that division IMO, but the UFC division is solid.

Pride FC doesn't have a WW division, so I'll ignore that. As for MW, Rich Franklin, Terrell, Silva and a bunch of others make the UFC entertaining. Silva is definitely top 3 in my mind. Lindland is up there somewhere, either #1 or #2, I'm not sure which. Pride has some awesome talent in that division as well. Filho, Suolev, Kang (!!), etc... I'd really like to see some cross promotional matches in this division - especially since Silva has improved his ground game since his last outing in Pride.

LHW and HW is no contest - Pride wins easily. The UFC has who? Liddell and Tito? At HW they have... Arlovski. Besides him, maybe only Vera would do well in Pride. Sylvia is a joke.

Re: elbows. Leave em in. It adds more to the fight. GnP with elbows is totally different from GnP without elbows. Yes, they cut, but so do knees to the head of a downed opponent and punches. There's nothing wrong with elbows. In fact, I'd say that it makes it more entertaining. I'd love to see the US rules add in kicks and kness to the head of a downed opponent. That would really shake things up for the wrestlers in the UFC as they'd have to worry about turning into a Sakuraba vs. Arona if they fought against a guy with a good sprawl. I could do without stomps though - they look way too dangerous compared to the rest, especially when you see huge guys like Shogun JUMPING and putting their entire body weight behind the stomp.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

The elbow injury was a direct result of Shogun placing his arm in a horrible position while trying to defend the take down. The joint couldn't resist the force of the fall, hence, it got fucked up. He wouldn't have been injured like that had he not used poor form in his takedown def.

I was expecting Shogun to defeat Coleman, but tonight I'm rooting for Randleman. That guy has just not been where it's at mentally in like half of his fights, but he seems prepared tonight. When Randleman is on, he can take out the best (see Randleman vs Filipovic 1). The man has tons of heart.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Humbled? Coleman went in their knowing that he didn't have much chance against Fedor. He admitted that the man is THE best fighter. Randleman is always emotionally charged like that. It's what he does. I just wish that he would channel some of that energy into learning SUBMISSION DEFENSE. Seriously, Hammerhouse knows nothing but wrestling.

Somebody at Sherdog actually analyzed the whole elbow stoppage thing (due to cuts). It really wasn't as big of a deal as everybody claims it to be. Seriously, fights don't get stopped due to elbow cuts that often.

Was anybody else impressed by Nastula? He really brought it to Barnett (who really needs to take a break - he's had 7 fights this year). I'm looking forward to more Pride in the US. I hope that they can eventually convince the athletic commissions to allow knees to downed fighters. Knees + elbows in the same org would be amazing, but that's apparently never going to happen. The Pride execs think that elbows cut too much and stop too many fights (cut yes, stop too many fights, no) and the UFC execs think that knees and kicks to downed opponents is too brutal. *sigh*

GSP is going to take it tonight. Anybody want Hughes?
