Yeah...the guy playing Light looks more, erm...intense. I think with eye makeup and spiked hair the L actor will look very good. One of the best things about adapting DN to a live-action movie is that the characters are drawn more Japanese than in many other manga series. I'm really happy with the poster, so I think this will turn out good.
But I'm wondering how they're going to end the movie when the manga doesn't have a definite ending? I mean, Spoiler:
Since the series was licensed and the storyline started to lag, I haven't been keeping up with the scanlations, so there might be some stuff that I'm not in the know about. Is there any potential end in sight for the series? If only it weren't a Shounen Jump title, it wouldn't be going on forever and ever -- although if it weren't a SJ title, it might not have attained the popularity it's currently enjoying. Meh. How ya doing, buddy? |
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Well you never know.
I might get into one of my moods one night and download all the chapters I've missed. I stopped around 78... This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
![]() I believe this looks convincing. And L only needs half the spikey that Mana has! They're probably not shooting anything in that pic. Or at least, I hope they're not. And also, is the guy playing L taller than Light? I mean, I know that L hunches, but I've always thought he was either the same height or a little shorter than Light.... I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Chato, I sure hope you're right about the
Spoiler:
You might actually convince me to start reading the scans again .I've already spoiled myself with Hellsing scans, so what the hell. I was speaking idiomatically. |
::sigh::
I've started reading the scans again. Right now I'm up to chapter 97. The story has picked up and gotten better (although probably nothing can match how it was in the beginning). I'm utterly confused about a RHCP song about California (?) being used for the movie, though. I mean, the events mostly take place in Japan. It's just...odd...not to mention there's about a zillion J-pop/rock groups and singers that I'm sure would love to do a song for the DN movie. But whatever. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
L is looking really, really good in the movie version! So perfect and wierd! But Light is...err..I don't know. His jaw seems so broad compared to the manga version. I know people never honestly look like manga characters, but the character designs in Death Note are much more realistically done than most manga so I figured it would be easier to find somebody closer in appearance. Also, he looks a bit old. He ages a bit in the manga as it progresses, so I'm curious how they're going to do that between movies. And I think to do this accurately, they should really have more than two...otherwise, they're going to have to invent an ending for the second movie? That never works... FELIPE NO |
Why is it in Flash format? Oh well. Makes it easier to save.
RYUK!!! I have a feeling that, compared to the 'real' actors he's going to look fake, but still...from that 2-sec clip he looks very, very close to the manga. And the music (up until what I'm assuming is the RHCP song) sounds very good as well. Now I'm all hyped for the release! Hopefully the subbers get on it as soon as they can. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
They switched because the 'official' English spelling came out in a promo that was run in an issue of SJ. Before, the scanlators were going by the way it was spelled in japanese, which because of the famous R/L thing, came out to "raito." Of course, it's spelled with the Kanji for moon, but pronounced as the english Light (go figure). The official spellings also meant that Ryuuku went to Ryuk, Raito to Light, and Remu to just Rem.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
I was satisfied with the ending. It was rather pathetic and sad (in a way...I mean,
Spoiler:
Is 108 the last chapter? Because there's quite a few loose ends to tie up. Also, I really would have liked Ohba to at least reference the reactions of Light's sister and mother throughout part of this whole mess. I mean, their father/husband died, and it was just kind of glossed over. SJ has, for once, not pushed a series beyond it's natural ending (like they do with soooo many of their manga) -- although if Ohba was tiring of it, maybe SJ kind of put pressure to extend it a little, hence the rather slow middle section of the series. But overall I really think it's the best thing to come out from SJ, bar none, in both the art and writing departments. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
It doesn't bother me too much about them changing the story that much (I mean, they can still end the movies with
Spoiler:
Plus, this will make all the L fangirls happy (like me!). And are you quite sure that Dani California will not be the OP theme? Because it's pretty official, considering it's listed under the "Music" part of the DN official site and referred to in the official trailer. The Shikao Suga song most likely is the ED theme, or something to that effect. And on the subject, the official site is really spiffy! I hadn't poked around it in quite a while. Anyways, I can't wait for June to come... This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I think it would be awesome if they actually had a theatrical release in the US, but somehow I doubt it. There's always a slight chance, if FUNimation acquires the rights to DN (which is very likely, since they own the licenses to other US Shounen Jump releases), that they might put it out in their "Funimation Films" series -- even if the distribution is terribly limited. I don't know how well that little project of theirs is going.
There's no doubt that they'll at least give it a US DVD release, though. I think it has real potential over here in the States, to audiences beyond that of anime/manga fans. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I like RHCP okay, but I'm not too hot on Dani California. And I still don't see how it fits in with DN o___O. Perhaps it's just a product placement by Warner Bros inc., since they're the band's record label and the movie's distributor?? I mean, the lyrics are almost entirely references to US stuff, like the state names and such. They're certainly promoting the RHCP song more than the other.
But since there's a connection with US music, it's even more likely that the movie will get a Stateside release. At the moment it's looking at theatrical releases in Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, The Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, and apparently some European countries and American companies have shown interest in it as well... I was speaking idiomatically. |
I loved the apple eating in the PV! And I'm sure with the popularity of Death Note, they're going to have Ryuuk make some apperances...from the 5-second flash of his CG self, he looks pretty good.
But of course, the test will be when we can see him for more than 5 seconds. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I think Ryuk looks pretty badass, myself. I can always tell CG, no matter how good they try to make it, so as long as it moves and lip-synchs impressively I'll be happy. And from what I've seen, he does.
![]() Can't wait to see it...I don't care if I have to watch a really crappy bootleg. FELIPE NO |
Yeah, Dani CA is the song only because WB is the one doing the releasing, methinks. The lyrics have absolutely nothing to do with DN or any of the themes in it:
Getting born in the state of Mississippi Papa was a copper And Mama was a hippie In Alabama she would swing a hammer Price you gotta pay when you break the panorama She never knew that there was Anything more than poor What in the world does your Company take me for Black bandana sweet Louisiana Robbin' on a bank in the state of Indiana She's a runner, rebel and a stunner On her merry way sayin' Baby watcha gonna Looking down the barrel of a Hot metal 45 Just another way to survive California rest in peace Simultaneous release California show your teeth She's my priestess, I'm your priest She's a lover baby and a fighter Shoulda seen it comin' when It got a little brighter With a name like Dani California The day was gonna come When I was gonna mourn ya A little loaded she was Stealin' another breath I love my baby to death California rest in peace Simultaneous release California show your teeth She's my priestess, I'm your priest Who knew the other side of you Who knew what others died to prove Too true to say goodbye to you Too true to say say say Push the fader, gifted animator One for the now and eleven for the later Never made it up to Minnesota North Dakota man was a gunnin' For the quota Down in the Badlands She was savin' the best for last It only hurts when I laugh Gone too fast California rest in peace Simultaneous release California show your teeth She's my priestess, I'm your priest California rest in peace Simultaneous release California show your teeth She's my priestess, I'm your priest ![]() Most amazing jew boots |
Somehow I don't find Dani CA to be a very uplifting song. The girl's dead, after all, and the song reflects on her. For whatever reason it makes me think of apocalyptic future-punk... something like Tank Girl, as opposed to Japan and supernatural events.
But that's just me. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Heh, Takeshi Obata (the artist for DN) was arrested today for illegal possession of a knife.
Article here. There's nowhere I can't reach.

Eh, yeah.
I guess I shouldn't speed-read after a full day of rehearsal .Fix'd. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Ohmygosh this is wonderful! Definitely does justice to the manga.
I'm so thrilled that the animation is done so well!! And I love the OP theme, and the choice of music in general (kyrie at the beginning was very well chosen). This may just get me sort of back into anime; I've been in a bit of a slump for the last half of a year or so. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

It was said that the anime would change some things around (shortening the Yotsuba group story arc wouldn't be a bad idea...), but since the manga is done and finished, I think they're going to stick closer to the basic ideas it's set forth instead of doing their own thing or adding lots of stupid filler.
The main problem comes up when the manga is still going or is on hiatus, and the company has to make up their own plots to fill holes in the story. I was speaking idiomatically. |
So... L-movie, anybody?
(click on the bottom left-hand button for a mock-up of the preview). Coming to Japanese theatres February 9th, 2008 T_T. I'm not sure that I like this idea, but whatever. Apparently it's just going to examine L's history and stuff, most likely pre-Death Note.
