I don't ask people to, but they generally seem inclined to take their shoes off before coming through the door anyway. So long as their shoes aren't covered in crap and look reasonably clean I'm not arsed.
When I go to other people's houses I always look for somewhere to leave my shoes; I feel quite uncomfortable wearing them inside, that and an immovable sense of politeness >.> Jam it back in, in the dark.
