I've found that Spybot S&D's Teatimer with ZoneAlarm Pro firewall is very effective. Though, I wouldn't recomend this if you've under 512MB of RAM.
Most of the programs mentioned above can be found on various bittorrent sites, and while I am not advocating this, it is a good to know if you are frustrated with the limitations of the software's free versions.

I use AVG Anvtivirus, Spybot S&D with Teatimer, Ad-Aware, ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and occasionally hijackthis. Good combination, if I say so myself.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
