Dashboard looks nice. Can someone tell me why a console needs a weather channel.
You remember right that those same NES games go for $40-50 apiece on GBA right? I have no trouble paying $5-10 for NES/SNES games, its not liking I'm buying every one, just the classics.

Also, fellow aussies, Toys'R'Us is offering a free launch title when you preorder a Wii. So you're getting a 2 Games + Console for around $350. Shit yeah.

And finally some more Fire Emblem footage. Oh shits, I need to check what November 19th is here.

Nooooo. Its a Sunday. Looks like its time to dust off a couple of sickdays.

But Kaga, you don't get it. It's called "playing on the go". And playing a perfect port in front of the TV is better than on the PC.

Oh yes, I do get it.
It doesn't sound like it. $350 (And thats assuming they bump it up from the $330 it converts to is fucking cheap for a new console. I mean, they said it won't be more expensive than $250US. What the hell did you think it was going to cost because I saw $249 right then. Then they added a game. As someone mentioned on the PA boards.

Nintendo: Won't be more than $250.
Everyone: Yay!
Nintendo: $250 + a game.
Everyone:

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

9:33 EST: Reggie takes stage again. Says Wii Tennis Wii Golf, Wii Baseball, Wii Bowling and Wii Boxing are all included in the Wii Sports disc. Calls it a five-game compilation. "This is designed to get everyone involved playing." Game will be packed with Wii. Everyone'll get it when they buy the system.

"We'll also offer consumers the widest range of launch titles ever in the history of videogames. The list is big and -- as you'll see -- it's new and nostalgic. Unique. Delivering a brand new type of entertainment."

250$ for the price isn't too bad. I was pretty much expecting that range anyways. I am a little dissapointed by the prices for the extras. I planned to do alot of multiplayer gatherings with the Wii. Since it only comes with 1 controller that means I've got to go out and buy a wiimote and a nunchuck just for a second player. If I have two more people I've got to buy even more. So I'll be paying, what.. 100-150$ extra for 3 more people?

I'm pretty interested in the Mii thing. I'm a fag for creating characters so making a mini me for the Wii will be a little fun. Sticking them in the games I play will be entertaining as well. I also like how I'll be able to use it to interact with other people or carry it to other Wiis on my controller. I'm assuming we'll have some kind of lobby or chat room system we can stick our characters in and chat with others? I know it was said there's message boards and stuff for Wii users.. but what about something for the mini people we make?

I'm not really too excited about the Virtual console. Since any games I would want I already have. If I dont have it I can download it for free.. I'm also disapointed you have to buy the damn browser for the Wii with Wii points. Why can't it just come built in for free? There was little point of it in the first place since you've got a PC. Sticking a price on it just makes ya want to use it even less.
I think thats what Nintendo is aiming for. You're not being forced to pay for something you won't use. You can play online as long as you have a Wi-Fi internet connection, you just don't have the browser available.

I'm still suprised people are willing to give up the chance to play it with a new control scheme over the new controller. I think it'll take away something from it if you limit yourself to the GC version.

You should see the Penny Arcade threads. We've been through about 140 pages in the last two hours or so. And then 70 from a false coverage report before that. Mind you that was absolutely hilarious once people realised the content was fake.

I was just watching the new game videos again after someone mentioned it and theres one there that looked a hell of a lot like Bushido Blade. We can only hope.

Region-Free Wii
Topic: Console Games

The Wii will be region-free, or at least it should be.

That's the word from Wired News' Joel Johnson, who found Nintendo's VP of marketing Perrin Kaplan at the recent New York City press event and got her to reveal that, like the Nintendo DS, Nintendo's Wii games will work on any console regardless of region.

While there may be a region lock that third-party publishers can choose to turn on, Nintendo seems to be setting the standard by making its own first-party games region free.

Here's what Joel filed this morning:

Wired had the opportunity to sit down after with Nintendo Vice-President of Marketing & Corporate Affairs—not to mention affable conference host—Perrin Kaplan to ask a few questions that weren't addressed in the press conference.

• Will the Wii be region-free? Yes. Like the Nintendo DS, the Wii will be able to play games from other regions, such as Japan, without any restriction. Kaplan implied there might be a region lock that publishers would be able to flip on, but it doesn't sound like the first-party titles from Nintendo will be restricted.

• Will games downloaded from the Virtual Console store be tied to an account like Xbox Live or a one-time-only download like iTunes? Tied to an account. Kaplan discussed a scenario where a player's Wii was broken or destroyed, but would be able to re-download titles they had previously bought to a new Wii machine. Because my left leg was burning from an accidental Zippo oil spill, I neglected to ask if a user would be able to log into friends' Wiis and play their Virtual Console downloads away from their home machine.

• Will Wii users be able to add storage via USB hard drives? No. The Wii's storage will be exclusively via flash memory storage, such as SD memory cards, at least at launch. Kaplan said a hard drive addition could be in the future, but that sounds more like a "Sure, why not?" response than one based in any immediate plans.

• How much will Opera cost? Unknown. No price has yet been set for the download-able Opera web browser, but it sounds like it could very well be free, once Nintendo finishes discussions with Opera.

The big news from the press conference, besides the price—$250 for the console with one controller and Wii Sports bundled, $40 for additional Wii Remotes and $20 for additional Wii Nunchucks—was the showing of "Wii Channels," an instant-on interface where Wii players will be able to create "Mii" (me) personal avatars that work in supported games; a Wii Shop where Virtual Console games can be purchased for "Wii Points"; and photo, movie, and web browsing.

It's a slick little interface, but I continue to question whether users will want to sit in front of a television browsing the web without a keyboard, especially at non-HDTV resolutions. I guess we'll see when the Wii launches in the Americas on November 19th.

http://blog.wired.com/games/index.blog?entry_id=1556591

I'm taking this with a grain of salt, but let it be true.

I still don't get the bitching over the VC console prices. I mean, they are optional, its not like they're forcing people to buy the fucking things. They cost the same as XBL arcade games, which people are perfectly fine with.

People are saying because the games are old they're not worth the cost. Its not like Live Arcade games are new either. Uno and Poker aren't the cutting edge of modern technology are they? I'm sure later on they'll set some sort of system up that nets you points when you buy games and accesories.

Regarding the controller price and the two parts being sold seperately, remember that its not just the nunchuck that will be used with the Wiimote. There was the light gun attachment with plenty of potential for expansion later on down the track. Say you want to play the new duck hunt game or whatever, rather than buying an entire lightgun you can just buy the attachment for it and clip your Wiimote into it.

And yeah, I love that interface, this is going to be the greatest console to play drunk ever.

Myer Australia is offering $600 worth of vouchers if you pre-order a Wii through them, I'm going to find out more about this later in the week and I'll post up what I find out when I do.

Toys'R'Us have the free game when you put down a $50 deposit.

Either is nice, but if you can use the vouchers anywhere I think I'll be going to Myers and load up on games and controllers.
