Are you looking for a camcorder or a DVR? They're very different things. If you're looking for a camcorder, I'm your man.
Finding something good for under 300 is gonna be tough, but I recommend going with either Canon or Panasonic. Sony is okay, but I've seen more people flip out and kill their Sony handicams than anything else. Panasonic and Canon have proven track records, its just a matter of what better suits your needs. What exactly are you looking for in a camera? Jam it back in, in the dark.
