My favorite horror movie as of late has been Wolf Creek. Everyone complains about how slow it is, but all that does is help make you appreciate the characters when the shit hits the fan. They're the first horror characters I've ever cared about. They nail this in 2 ways - 1, we get to know them very well, and 2, they don't deserve it.
That brutal combination provides a very chilling horror movie. Jam it back in, in the dark.
