Thailand will be the best country you ever visited. Backpack there. Dollar is worth a lot and the peopel are fucking nice (since thailand makes a majority of its income off foreigners)
Be sure to hit Phi phi island, and pattaya beach, possibly sumui island too (google all of those). And definetly check out temples.
To give you a rough idea of expenses, I stayed in a 5 star hotel in Bangkok right next to the SkyTrain station for 60 bucks a day! I went wake boarding at a pully type wake boarding place... 10 bucks for 3 hours! Street food is like 50 cents or less, and regular food is also dirt cheap if not the same price as america.
Be careful though. Thai people try to rip off foreigners. For isntance when I take a taxi (Im chinese but can speak thai and get away with haggling) it only costs me 40 baht (roughly $1) but for foreigners they might try to charge you 60 (1.50) or 80 (2 bux) instead. Of course with any asian country haggle with everything you buy off the street!
edit: despite the ticket is like 800-1200 dollars, you will save save save since things are so cheap there.
