Just listened to the new High On Fire record and it kicked my ass just like the last one. What a band.

I was speaking idiomatically.

You should check out his Moonchild and Astronome records as well. Same lineup.

I totally get where you're coming from, I guess I'm just anxious to appreciate more. XD I always find it frustrating when I can't get into something obscure that some people really love. Jazz/death sounds like a wonderful combination. I'm totally with you on the Opeth thing, I've been getting into a bit more death this year but I'm still lagging a bit behind you on that one. But that weird vocal shit on the Zorn album is just weird. XD Anyway, I guess I'll go back to Bungle and try again.
Man, you think Patton does weird shit on Zorn's records, you should hear his solo output. He has two albums of only his voice, though you'd never guess it if you didn't know before listening.

Pretty much all metal is pretentious self-indulgent wanking.

Because the influence of a great artist somehow imparts that artist's talent.

Just found out I was going to see GWAR in a few weeks. Not sure who's opening yet, but that's kind of inconsequential considering.

No, I wouldn't pay for that. I'm at the first leg of their next tour. They're headlining a smaller club tour.

I just uploaded the documentary The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years about the metal scene in Los Angeles in the mid 1980's. It's a fairly solid mixture of interviews and performance footage, with some of the greats talking coherently about the genre and a bunch of then up and coming bands making complete dicks out of themselves.

It's here if you're interested:

Anyone besides me and Iwata into Electric Wizard?

Their new record just leaked, and it's their best since Dopethrone easily. Hoping they do a Canadian tour this time.

As far as I can tell, Nightwish=Lacuna Coil=Evanescence

It's all the same shit: slightly altered but still pretty boring nu-metal that sells because there are a lot of sad, sad metal fans who think listening to a band fronted by a pretty girl will somehow get them laid.

Don't get pissy at me about feminism or anything either, I like a lot of female artists in a lot of genres, but this get-a-goth-girl-in-a-corset nonsense is fucking played out.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I don't think the music is awful, I think the music is positively mediocre at every level. The fact is, if these bands had male lead singers, or maybe even if they didn't shove their lead singer in a corset and white makeup at every single photoshoot, they wouldn't sell a single record.

Your Celtic Frost analogy doesn't make an ounce of sense.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I keep hearing the "pop" singer tag being thrown around, and quite frankly it's bullshit. What defines a pop singer? There's a range of voices that appear in popular charted music, there isn't a fixed meaning to the word "pop". All vocalists have their own style, such as all the females in metal have their own style.
The pop singer tag is thrown around because these bands have taken a genre that exists really solely to be confrontational and have kind of bastardized it into radio friendly jingles. It's pop music dressed up for halloween. If that's your thing, I'm fine with that. Just don't pretend it's something it isn't.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

That's not what I said at all. "Confrontational" does not mean any of the things you listed.

I like a lot of pop music. I'm not shitting on pop music. Just call things for what they are. I'm not going to argue this anymore.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Anyhow, take the worst Metal band you know - wouldn't it be nice to hear more of that and less of Britney, 50 Cent and all the other crap when you turn on the radio?
I much prefer crap that knows that it's crap to crap that pretends to be something else but still smells like shit up close.

Darklink, you might consider that when everyone else in the thread agrees with Morrigan, a fairly rare occurrence in and of itself, that you could be the one who misinterpreted a post in this specific situation.

I've never appreciated any of Gehenna's work. Can't say why, exactly. Just lacking something.

With Mayhem, try listening to their early demos for more of the black-metal atmosphere thing.

Upon bringing up the copy I have on my hard-drive, my dislike can probably be attributed to the horrendous quality of the rip I have. I'm downloading a high-quality one right now.

I listened to First Spell again, with the same conclusion. I didn't dislike it as much as I used to, as the keyboards were a lot higher in the mix on this copy, but it still didn't do it for me. I think it was the vocals mostly. They were too... I don't know, clean-sounding?

Anyway, don't hate it, just doesn't do it for me.

I was speaking idiomatically.
