I don't know how many people in this thread are into stoner/doom metal, but Krelian's dragon comment has reminded me of a great band from Argentina called Dragonauta who just put out a new record I still have to pick up.

Anyone else into this genre?

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

As Krelian pointed out earlier, doom metal is a metal subgenre as typified by an often drug related sludgy, crushing sound. In other words, trying to sound like Master of Reality, hence Black Sabbath. Though I agree with you they shouldn't be categorized with the genre they inspired. Not that it matters at all.

I think that saying "Prog Rock" is like saying "Metal". Their both very broad terms, but it tells you what ballpark you're in.

And I agree, you can't compare Geronimo Black (hurrah for overly obscure references) to Yes, because they're much more influenced by the blues than the Silver Apples. Too many people think progressive music starts and ends with adding keyboards.

EDIT: post 666 in the Metal Thread. Kickass.

While I'm not as into Arsis as Iwata, I have to agree that it's a great record.

Also, thanks for that Otyg demo you posted a while back. I've been listening to it non-stop.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I just mean that a Moonsorrow/Sunn O))) concert comparison isn't really fair. It's a totally different environment.

Alright, so I just got the new reissue of The Obsessed's Lunar Womb record. Sounds great, but they fiddled with the cover art which is a bit of a downer.

I know I've seen the painting they used for the cover somewhere else, but I can't place it. Anyone know what the name of the painting is or who did it?

Spoiler:

Meh. I loved Fantomas, but pretty much anything Mike Patton touches is gold for me, so a new side project is good news anyway.

Although I rather like Gogol Bordello, and their live show is absolutely insane, they do not by any means belong in The Metal Thread. Not even close.

I just listened through the Goatsnake discography. I really dig their sound.
I'll pretty much buy anything that comes out on Southern Lord. Just one of those quality labels.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of French '70s RIO stuff in the vein of Univers Zero, and I have to say I don't think I've ever heard anything heavier than this. Those French prog-heads really had their shit together.

The best metal album I've listened to recently (and really, it HAS to qualify as metal) is John Zorn's Six Litanies For Heliogabalus. It is the heaviest thing I have heard in years.

I've always thought Accept was really over rated actually. People are always talking about how good Restless and Wild and Balls to the Walls are, but they're pretty much just some band who jumped from the Scorpions bandwagon onto the thrash bandwagon.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Anyway, Blind Guardian made me think of this band called Black Jester I heard at Prog Archives (no similarity, just popped into my head). I've only ever heard the one track they have there, and the vocals are absolutely horrible, but it's not bad otherwise. Anyone heard of them?
They're pretty much a shitty Italian band trying to be Marillion.
