After reading this, I may have to check them out. I had pegged them as epic power metal crap after seeing an album cover of theirs. There are a lot of bands I enjoy based on the attitude of the band rather than the music.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

There are far more pathetic sounding bands out there that take them selves completely seriously. For example, half of all black metal outfits.

You may or may not have seen the documentary that came out last year titled Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. As is rather obvious, it is about metal. It looks at the artists, the fans, the history, and the music. It is very well put together, and looks at many subgenres. Interviews abound. Personally, I think the highlight is an unintentionally hilarious interview with a member of Gorgoroth in some dank Scandinavian basement. Highly reccomended.

Anyway, I uploaded it to give you all a chance to see it. Whether you're a veteran or just getting into metal, it's worth a glance. Obviously, they can't do in depth coverage of every band, ever, but they do a very good job of giving an overall impression.

EDIT: No, just mentioned. My mistake.

The DVD has a second disc with the full interviews on it. Definitely worth grabbing.

I think you're right elevator. I don't think there is a genre I don't listen to, but I definitely think Sonata Arctica is pretty lame. Never really listened to Dragonforce mind you.

Even though I like John Petrucci a good deal more than Yngwie Malmsteen, who is a real asshole, I prefer the G3 Live in Denver to the Tokyo concert. This is mostly because of Steve Vai's blistering set in Denver versus his comparatively lacklustre Tokyo outing.

Last night I saw Mastodon, Children of Bodom, Lamb Of God and Slayer. I know no one who frequents this thread likes Slayer, so however great I think their set was, I'll skip over it to what I though was the other highlight of the show, Mastodon. Besides the fact that they are a very tight live act, they can really put on a great show. They were just fun to watch.

Also, possibly aided by how the arena was a ganja hotbox, their material really picked up a heavier, sludgier sound than the albums, of which I am also a fan. Anyone else a fan of Mastodon or catch this tour?

I'm neutral. I probably listen to more metal with aggressive vocals than clean, but I wouldn't say I enjoy those vocals more.

There are a few NWOBHM acts I'm really into. As you mentioned, Angel Witch's debut remains a classic, and I still listen to the two Witchfinder General albums, but I can't get into a lot of stuff from the era. Def Leppard and Tokyo Blade just don't appeal to me, and Cloven Hoof reminds me too much of Manowar.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

In a lot of ways, Avenged Sevenfold stands as a pop-culture culmination of everything many metalheads dislike about the genre. They are a figurehead for an entire front of bastardized "metalcore" which is an absolute afront to the works of bands like Biohazard and Nuclear Assault.

They parade names like M. Shadows, The Reverend, and Synyster Gates with a complete and utter lack of a sense of irony. Synyster Gates? Is this fucking AFI?

Also, they played that daylong shitfest faux shoe commerical, the Warped Tour.

If you want to get technical, then yes, they are a metal band. They just fucking suck -- and the metal subculture rejects things that suck by saying they're "not metal".

Mainstream pop music has been edging towards more "extreme" fair over the years. Innocent pop music had been milked. Sexual deviancy was an issue in the 80's. The nineties saw a return of the innocent pop group, but this was rejected for more fake rebellion in the name of Good Charlotte. Avenged Sevenfold is just the next step in the shitty pop music evolutionary scale. Though, the term evolutionary would usually imply things are getting better.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

To me, the BM bands with ridiculous names is just part of the package. Since everything in the black metal world is just so extremely over the top, it fits. When Avenged Sevenfold does it on the other hand, it goes from ridiculous, over the top satanic hilarity to a bunch of scrawny Hot-Topic kids who don't get the joke.

I buy as much music as I can, and have a collection of CD's, tapes, and vinyl, but there's just too much good music to actually have a copy of everything. If I had a physical copy of everything in my entire music collection I would need four or five rooms of shelving and it would cost a few hundred thousand dollars. Not to mention all of the stuff available on the internet that's nearly impossible to find actual copies of, especially some of the more obscure 7" and 12" singles.

That being said, I do count the stuff I have downloaded in my collection. I'm a bit of an archivist to be truthful, so I have different numbers for different parts of my collection, but I consider it as a whole generally.

Amon Amarth has lots of nordic themed lyrics, but their music doesn't really fall into the viking/folk metal category. I believe most people categorize them as a death metal band.

Speaking of that though, any of you have opinions on the band Lordi? I have just heard "Blood Red Sandman" a few days ago and I instantly went out and ordered their album.

I think Gwar's act has gone beyond a gimmick at this point. It's an institution. Most entertaining show in metal in my opinion. Also, their albums are getting better as they age.

Lordi, as has been stated by Oderus Urungus, is but an imitation which needs to be destroyed.

I have to agree with guyinrubbersuit, Mars Volta isn't metal. That's like saying Van Der Graaf Generator or King Crimson is metal. It's progressive rock music, but not prog metal.

Actually, I rather like the Mars Volta, but they're still not metal, and as such shouldn't be discussed here.

Anyhow, lately I've been listening to a lot of eighties metal. Anyone here heard Thor's Only The Strong? It's quickly becoming one of my favorites of the era.

Folk/Viking metal is one of the very few genre's I've never been able to get into. Besides the mandatory Bathory records, it all just seems kind of bleh to me. I gave that Arkona album a shot, and it seems the same. I'll give it another try, I suppose. What records would you guys recommend to someone just setting in?
