Anyone ever seen the movie "Rock n' Roll Nightmare" featuring Vancouver metal legend Thor? That's right, Jan-Mikl Thor, lead singer of Thor, who bent metal bars clenched in his teeth on stage. I've heard some awful reviews and some so-awful-it-kicked-ass reviews. It's long out of print, so getting myself a copy isn't much of an option.
On a side note, check out Thor's Only The Strong. One of the greatest metal albums of the eighties. "Let The Blood Run Red", indeed. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Yeah I've heard about that. A theater here is actually giving it a run, supposedly.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Hey S?ecter, you wanted Winnipeg shows?
MTS Center. July 9. Slayer. Lamb Of God. Mastodon. Children Of Bodom. Thine Eyes Bleed. The Unholy Alliance Tour is making it to Winnipeg. Finally something like this comes to town. Last year, SOTU went from Minneapolis to SASKATOON! About time. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
My favourite new metal album without a doubt is Age Of Winters, the debut record from The Sword. It's like all the nerds you've ever met made a doom metal album, and it kicked ass (sorry, Rush). Definitely check this out. I posted it in the Music Exposure Club a while back, but here's a link if you didn't catch that. http://rapidshare.de/files/15820014/...nters.zip.html

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I've listened to Octavarium all the way through once or twice, and to me the low points outnumber the high points (though they are high points). Out of everything I've heard by them, I recommend Change of Seasons. It's a covers album, but it's pretty interesting to hear the way they do Zeppelin and Elton John.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
YES! I've been thinking this since I heard it. Sorry Helloween, I know it's not your favourite, but Morrigan's absolutely right. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
As far as Japanese metal goes, it doesn't get better than Boris in my opinion.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Well, new may not be the term for it anymore. Their last album, 2005's Transgressions was not as strong as the previous year's Archetype. Whereas the 2004 offering dished out more straight up metal, their latest kind of panders off as they return to Industrial, with a low point being an out of place U2 cover which is strangely like the original. I don't think highly of industrial/metal crossovers, really. It hasn't been pulled off well yet.

Have you checked out Schuldiner's post-mortum Zero Tolerance disc? It's rehearsal sessions, so the sound quality isn't great, but it's definitely worth a listen or two, especially for the cheap price.
How ya doing, buddy? |
Why don't you consider AC/DC and Kiss metal? They were sure as fuck considered metal in 1976.

He clearly knows you.
The guy with the Metal Archives sig posts here? WTF? What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
That's a nice avatar you got there, Iwata. R.I.P.

Metal is boring if it's the only genre you listen to because then there is no contrast. But don't start listening to Black Eyed Peas, for god's sake. That is not an acceptable alternative for anything.

Well apparently I didn't explain the contrast statement. Sure, there are diffferent types of metal, but all metal kind of loses it's impact when you hear nothing but metal. If you listen to a metal album after listening to another genre, it seems heavier.

I hold to it. Listen to Vol. 4 immediately after Master of Reality and then listen to it after something acoustic. The notes don't change but by contrast, it's a heavier sounding record.

Yes, The Sword are absolutely derivative of every other doom metal group before them, but the album is still an enjoyable listen. I didn't hear of this tour refusal business about them. Mind expanding on it?
You mentioned Electric Wizard, a band I've been into a lot lately. If anyone has a copy of their album Come My Fanatics that they'd be willing to rip and post somewhere, it would be greatly appreciated. I can't seem to find it short of special order, which I'm not willing to do without a listen or at least a review I can trust. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I believe you. I'd heard a good deal of talk about them being a hipster scene kind of thing, but I hadn't heard of outright metal refusal like that. Taking a look now at the other artists on their label, it does seem to make sense.
