Old vehicles are great. What I wouldn't do to feel confident in my car again.
Everything was perfect with my 90 Acura Integra until a year and a half ago, when the timing belt snapped while I was driving on the highway. Engine stopped immediately, and I coasted to a stop.
Somehow, whether it be the grace of god or good design on the part of the Japanese, the pistons and cylinders snapped into neutral position and nothing was damaged. Quotes from mechanics at the time to repair this was over the $1000 mark. I was thoroughly depressed, and it couldn't have come at a worse time. I had to commute to school and work everyday...a 40 minute drive both ways.
My mechanic friend and I fixed it over the period of a few weeks for under $200. Then the spark plugs, water pump, brakes.
Half a year later, the alternator died and one of the exhaust system pipes broke. Needed a full tune up, which my friend and I did.
It's running well at the moment, but there's that dull ache in the pit of my stomach that tells me I might have problems again this year. Let's hope that it lasts. *fingers crossed*
Jam it back in, in the dark.
