I ususally type out whatever laugh I'm actually using in real life while in an online conversation. If it's "Heh", that's what all the unfortunate people in my IRC chan get to see. Then there's the words I don't actually say out loud, like "lawlz".
This also depends greatly on what sort of company I'm keeping. I haven't really run into anybody who queefs a bubble over the occasional usage of "lawlz" or "srsly" or some others, so I keep using them whenever I feel like. Most amazing jew boots +_+
